On this day the Rebbe Rashab was born, in the year 5621 (1860). The Tzemach Tzedek would refer to that year as כתר"א (kisra), which is Aramaic for “crown.” The Rebbe Rashab was given the name of the Mitteler Rebbe and half of the name of the Tzemach Tzedek’s father. * Every year, on his birthday, my revered father [the Rebbe Rashab] would deliver a maamar, but unless the day fell on Shabbos, it was delivered in private. On his last birthday in this world, he delivered a maamar based on the words, Nasata Liyreiecha Nes [...]. When it ended, he told me: “On one’s birthday one should deliver a discourse of Chassidus. May G‑d grant you the gift of delivering a discourse of Chassidus onyour birthday — but may this take place with kindness and mercy.” It took seven years [for this blessing to materialize]. - Hayom Yom 20 Cheshvan

She Interrupted my meeting! Rabbi Chaim Bruk On Thursday, while on a Zoom meeting with our CFO, I missed a call from LGHS, the high school that Chaya attends in Chicago. I paused the meeting and immediately called back to see if everything was ok. Thank G-d all was well; it was Chaya calling both me and Chavie, during school, which is highly unusual, to let us know that she did well on her “Gemer”, which is intensive testing on a broad range of Jewish knowledge. My heart was filled; happy for her success, joyous for her growth and delighted to hear a tone of satisfaction in her voice. It’s her third year away from home and she’s excelling as a shining example of a “Daughter of Israel”. In this week’s Torah portion, Vayera, we read about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the wickedness of the people who brought it upon themselves. Lot, who lived in Sodom, was not exactly an angel, far from it, but being the nephew of Abraham and Sarah, having grown up in their home, he had a deeply embedded spark of kindness in his soul. So, despite the risk of being punished by his fellow citizens, he opened his home to the angels disguised as guests, being super hospitable to strangers, despite the danger associated with his actions. His record on “holiness” was abysmal, but he couldn’t shake off his childhood training to care for others and exude unbridled compassion. I once read that “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them”. While I do not think that this is an absolute science, as many good parents have children who don’t necessarily follow in their footsteps, Chavie and I always strive to role model kindness for our children and to show them, by example, what we see as valuable in this chaotic world. Chaya works really hard in school; she is a deep thinker, inquisitive student, and always showing kindness especially to those struggling. Today I am celebrating the phone call of joy and the success of a young Jewish woman, I’m honored to call my daughter, who is excited about her heritage and working hard to grow evermore. We impart values; we can only hope that they’re paying attention! May G-d guard our brethren in Israel and the world over from harm and send us Mashiach speedily. May G-d protect the armed forces of Israel and the United States wherever they may be!

This Saturday marks the 109th anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba, a pivotal military victory marked by the charge of the Australian Light Horse Brigade. The Embassy of Israel in Australia honours the bravery of the Australian soldiers who fought there and remembers those who lost their lives, many of whom were laid to rest at the Be’er Sheva ANZAC War Cemetery in Israel 🇮🇱🇦🇺 Lest We Forget.

In response to a question at yechidus, the Alter Rebbe once gave the following response: "Chassidus is Shema Yisrael. The word Shema (שמע) is an acronym for the words, 'Raise your eyes on high' (שאו מרום עיניכם) - 'on high,' not 'heavenward.' That means higher and higher, reaching beyond the intellect. Yet [we should] understand this very [non-intellectual] dimension with our minds as well - as the verse continues, "and behold Who created these." - Hayom Yom 19 Cheshvan

Mazal tov to @Cha_Knobloch, WJC's Commissioner for Holocaust Memory, who celebrates her 94th birthday today. Ad 120! A Holocaust survivor, Dr. Knobloch headed the Munich Jewish community from 1985 and also served as the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany from 2006-2010. It was the first time a woman was elected to lead the organization. She dedicated her efforts to the revival of Jewish life in Germany. Among her major achievements was the opening in 2006-2007 of Munich’s main new Ohel Jakob synagogue, the community center, as well as the Jewish museum. In 2008, Dr. Knobloch was awarded the Grand Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Despite the rising tide of antisemitism in Europe, and the threats the community faces, Dr. Knobloch is optimistic: “I have great faith in young people, and I mean both Jewish and non-Jewish. I think they will take on the responsibility, and that is ultimately all that matters.”
