And Jeremy's point is that this psychological suffering proves there's something deeper happening within us than mere animal competition. He says humanity has suffered not from a non-psychological animal condition but from a psychologically troubled human condition. I think that sentence alone carries staggering implications. Because if our suffering is psychological in origin and all you have to do is take an honest look in the mirror or take a walk downtown on a Friday night to see evidence of that then it means

Over the eons a chaotic universe organised itself into stars, planets and galaxies humancondition.com/freedom-eโฆ
โand that here on Earth, atoms became ordered or integrated to form molecules โ which in turn integrated to form compounds โ virus-like organisms โ single-celled organisms โ multicellular organisms โ then societies of multicellular organisms โ and beyond that the integration of species members into โSpecie Individualsโ.
So the direction or theme or purpose or meaning of existence is the ordering or integration or complexification of matter, a process that is driven by the physical law of Negative Entropy where, in an open system, in which energy can come into the system from outside itโin Earthโs case, from the sun, and, in the case of the universe, from the original โbig bangโ explosion that created itโmatter integrates; it develops order. โHolismโ, which the dictionary defines as โthe tendency in nature to form wholesโ, and โteleologyโ, which is defined as โthe belief that purpose and design are a part of natureโ, are both terms that recognise this integrative โtendencyโ.
In 1987, the physicist Paul Davies acknowledged the integrative process when he wrote that โWe seem to be on the verge of discovering not only wholly new laws of nature, but ways of thinking about nature that depart radically from traditional scienceโฆโWay back in the primeval phase of the universe, gravity triggered a cascade of self-organizing processesโorganization begets organizationโthat led, step by step, to the conscious individuals who now contemplate the history of the cosmos and wonder what it all meansโฆโThere exists alongside the entropy arrow another arrow of time [the Negative Entropy arrow], equally fundamental and no less subtle in natureโฆโI refer to the fact that the universe is progressingโthrough the steady growth of structure, organization and complexityโto ever more developed and elaborate states of matter and energy. This unidirectional advance we might call the optimistic arrow, as opposed to the pessimistic arrow of the second law. There has been a tendency for scientists to simply deny the existence of the optimistic arrow. One wonders why.โ
Biologist Jeremy Griffith explains that the reason โwhyโ โscientistsโ โdenyโ โthe optimistic arrowโ of Integrative Meaning is because it confronts humans with the issue of our divisive, selfish and competitive, โgood and evilโ-conflicted, apparently non-integrative human condition. The fact is that for a larger whole to form and hold together the parts of that whole must consider the welfare of the whole above their own welfareโput simply, selfishness is divisive or disintegrative while selflessness is integrative. So, consider-others-above-yourself, altruistic, unconditional selflessness is the underlying theme of existence; itโs the glue that holds the world together and what we really mean by the term โloveโ. BUT, again, acknowledging that the meaning of life is to be integrative, cooperative, selfless and loving left humans feeling unbearably condemned as bad, evil or unworthy for our divisive competitive, selfish and aggressive, seemingly-unloving behaviour.
In fact, despite Integrative Meaning being an extremely obvious truthโbecause there are hierarchies of ordered matter everywhere we look, such as in trees, animals, our body, rocks, clouds, etc, etcโit has been such a terrifyingly condemning truth that we deified the process of Integrative Meaning as โGodโ, thus making it something separate and superior to us, not connected to us in an earthly, practical way. As the philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev put it, โHe cannot [man struggles to] break through to paradise that lies beyond the painful distinction between good and evil, and the suffering connected therewith. Manโs fear of God is his fear of himself, of the yawning abyss of non-being [alienation] in his own nature.
But, now that understanding of the human condition has been found and our divisive behaviour is explained, it becomes psychologically safe to demystify #God as Integrative Meaning, and, by so doing, finally reconcile #religion and #science... and much, much more โ> read on humancondition.com/freedom-eโฆ

Our primate ancestors developed our altruistic, cooperative and loving moral instincts through the "love-indoctrination" process;
humancondition.com/freedom-eโฆ
While a motherโs maternal instinct to care for her offspring is selfish (as genetic traits normally have to be for them to reproduce and carry on into the next generation), from the infantโs perspective the maternalism has the appearance of being selfless. From the infantโs perspective, it is being treated unconditionally selflesslyโthe mother is giving her offspring food, warmth, shelter, support and protection for apparently nothing in return. So it follows that if the infant can remain in infancy for an extended period and be treated with a lot of seemingly altruistic love, it will be indoctrinated with that selfless love and grow up to behave accordinglyโand over many generations that behaviour will become instinctive because genetic selection will inevitably follow and reinforce any development process occurring in a species; the difficulty was in getting the development of unconditional selflessness to occur in the first place, for once it was regularly occurring it would naturally become instinctive over time. And being semi-upright from living in trees, and thus having their arms free to hold a dependent infant, it was the primates who have been especially facilitated to develop this nurtured, loving, cooperative nature.

In this chapter, Griffith elaborates massively on how his instinct v. intellect theory explains what happened to humanโs increasingly manifest conscious mind as it clashed with our much older and more established instincts . After an introductory overview, he traces the stages of human development in increasing depth, linking behavioral changes with evidence from fossil discoveries, anthropology, primatology and observations from researchers working in the field.

Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing is one of the most quoted thinkers in Jeremy Griffith's books and essays about the human condition, and for good reason, because Laing admitted how profoundly estranged or alienated we humans have becomeโalmost completely blocked-off from the truth of the extent of our self-corruption and from the truth of the amazing and wonderful soulful real world that we lost access to when we became conscious, the human condition emerged and we had to start living deep inside Platoโs dark cave.

In every generation, young people have wrestled with the paradox and hypocrisy of human life:
โข Why is everyone so fake?
โข Why do adults fight?
โข Why is everyone so unhappy and preoccupied?
โข Why are we going to a lavish party when people are starving?
โข Why do men kill each other?
In essence, theyโve been asking the fundamental question: โWhy isnโt the world ideal?โ
But parents - unable to explain the riddle of the #humancondition and resigned to a life of denial and distraction - have never been able to answer. These questions made adults so uncomfortable that young people quickly learned to stop asking.
This silence from the adult world created deep confusion for teenagers trying to make sense of life. The silence was so total, so powerful, that few could stand against it. Eventually, the pressure to conform - combined with the pain and #depression that came from confronting the truth - forced them to give up the search for answers.
Once resigned, the reason behind all the falseness became clear - they too became part of the lie, part of the problem faced by the next generation.

Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith has found that key to the โselfishness, greed, and apathyโ that Professor Gus Speth reflected is the key to our environmental problems. After decades working at the highest levels of environmental policy, Speth, a former Yale School of the Environment dean concluded that the greatest challenges were not scientific or technical, but human, writing that, โI used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy.โ

#Plato gave a very clear warning of the great danger of intolerance threatening to prevent the emergence of understanding of the human condition in his allegory of the cave.
He explained that "the process [of revealing the truth about the human condition] would be a painful one, to which he would much object, and when he emerged into the light his eyes would be so overwhelmed by the brightness of it that he wouldnโt be able to see a single one of the things he was now told were real" and "they would say that his [the person who tries to deliver understanding of the human condition] visit to the upper world had ruined his sight [they would treat him as if he was mad], and [they would say] that the ascent [out of the cave] was not worth even attempting. And if anyone tried to release them and lead them up, they would kill him if they could lay hands on him."
So, the great danger when understanding of the human condition does finally arrive - which it now has with Jeremy Griffith's breakthrough biological treatise - is that some will be intolerant of the emerging information, and the paradigm shift that follows, and try to reinstate the historical denials that have been used to block exposure to the issue of the human condition, which as Plato have warned, is a very serious problem if we are to see a future free of the human condition for the human race.

So, yes, WHY are we lovable?
How could we be good when all the evidence seems to unequivocally indicate that we are a deeply flawed, bad, even evil species?
What is the answer to this question of questions, this problem of โgood and evilโ in the human make-up, this greatest of all paradoxes and dilemmas of the human condition?
What caused humans to become divisively behaved and, more importantly, how is this divisive behaviour ever going to be brought to an end?
THIS, the issue of the human condition, is the REAL question facing the human race.

Those lines, written in the late 1980s, could serve as an anthem for our age of disillusionment. From Wall Street bailouts to widening inequality, the moral doubts about capitalism remain as raw as ever.
But what if the story of greed and inequality isn't just economic? What if the roots of competition and ambition lie deeper โ in human psychology itself? That's the claim made by Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith, whose scientific explanation of the human condition has been widely commended by leading scientists and thinkers around the world.
