Importantly different once international aviation & shipping CO2 is included. And arguably, territorial emissions should be considered alongside consumption based accounting to give a total UK carbon footprint. The total 1990-today reduction is ~20%; ie. a mean of 0.6% per year.

#MapOnATuesday Anyone fancy a journey back in time via this Birmingham City Transport bus and tram route map from 1939. You could stop off at the Palas De Danse in Ladywood for a mean foxtrot. Reference - MAP/501644 @LibraryofBham

ALT Title and key to the map in the top left corner. Title is Birmingham City Transport. Key has numerous categories with corresponding symbols and lines. A small insert just beneath this titled City Termini with corresponding map of the city centre. The larger map consists of a series of coloured lines representing tram and bus routes. Street and road names are shown along with the outlines of buildings and establishments, as well as the names of Birmingham suburbs.

Rise of wind and fall of coal in the UK!
Coal collapsed in 10 years and goes to zero in September.
Wind skyrocketed from ~5% in 2010 to nearly 30% in 2023, with the UK awarding today contracts for 6.4 GW of land and offshore wind!
Beautiful chart!

BREAKING: Sixth UK renewable auction secures record* 131 projects
☀️3.3GW solar @ £50/MWh**
💨1.0GW onshore wind @ £50/MWh
🌊💨 3.4GW new offshore @ £59
🌊💨1.6GW old offshore @ £54
🛟0.4GW floating wind @ £140
* the 9.6GW of capacity today is below the record 11GW from 2022, but today has more individual projects
** all in £(2012)
Notable that offshore wind prices are well below maximum set by govt and only ~50% above previous record low

Any serious engagement with carbon budgets for staying within 1.5C puts it beyond doubt that there is no room for any new oil and gas projects. This conclusion is rigorously established in a recent paper in Science, among others: science.org/doi/abs/10.1126/…

An important principle is that if you can’t trust an MP on climate it tells you that you also can’t trust them on anything at all that you might care about.
If an MP denies the climate emergency they are either too dishonest or not smart enough to be in politics.

The vast majority of Britain's railways are a jack of all trades and a master of none.
Because of our mix of fast, slow, non-stop and stopping trains, we aren't able to squeeze services together to get the most out of the existing infrastructure.
