More than 150 years ago, @aubreystrobel's ancestors operated Philip Strobel and Sons, a furniture business with a warehouse on Elizabeth Street in Chinatown. The company crafted furniture for bars, hotels and restaurants before eventually disappearing. But while the business faded into history, its furniture survived. Determined to reconnect with her family's past, Aubrey turned to social media to track down the pieces her ancestors created. Today, she has four pieces in her West Village apartment, making her the largest known private collector of Strobel and Sons furniture. thetablet.org/highlights/aub…

The future of the Church is bright — and young Catholics across Brooklyn and Queens are showing that they're an important part of its present. An estimated 1,500 middle and high school students came together for the @brooklyndiocese's annual Youth Day celebrations, held at two locations for the first time due to growing participation. On Oct. 24, hundreds gathered at Our Lady of Angels Church in Bay Ridge for a day of prayer, fellowship and fun, including Mass celebrated by Bishop Robert Brennan, faith-filled discussions, dancing and Eucharistic adoration. One week earlier, students gathered at @ctkroyals in Middle Village for the Queens celebration. 📸 @paulakatinas and @JohnQuaglione. thetablet.org/youth-day-prov…

A deadly terrorist attack on a church in Jordan has left eight people dead and 40 others wounded, sending shockwaves through the country's Christian community. On Oct. 23, three gunmen reportedly opened fire on mourners gathered for a funeral service at St. George's Orthodox Church in Hammoud, a small Christian village in southern Jordan. Church bells rang across the country the following day in remembrance of the victims, as Jordan's King Abdullah II condemned the massacre and vowed the “harshest retaliation” against those responsible. thetablet.org/jordan-terrori…

Following his doctor’s advice, @pontifex will not travel to Assisi Oct. 27 to mark the 40th anniversary of St. John Paul II’s landmark World Day of Prayer for Peace, the Vatican said. The decision comes after his medical team said “subsequent oncological evaluation confirmed that no further treatment is necessary" following the removal of the lower lobe of the pope’s right lung and subsequent tests on the removed tissue confirming he had lung cancer. During the visit, the pope was slated to join Christian leaders in the Lower Basilica of St. Francis for a prayer service alongside Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. thetablet.org/pope-leo-xiv-c…

After more than 150 years, New York City's horse-drawn carriage industry is facing its final chapter. On Oct. 22, the @nyccouncil voted to end the iconic Central Park carriage rides, passing Romanch's Law amid longstanding concerns about animal welfare and public safety. Supporters of the legislation point to horse deaths, accidents and working conditions as reasons to end the industry. But the decision has also sparked concerns about the livelihoods of more than 150 carriage drivers, whose union has vowed to challenge the measure. Under the legislation, carriage operations would end in June 2028, with the city required to develop a transition plan for operators and provisions to relocate the horses to sanctuaries, @katievasqueztv reports. thetablet.org/highlights/nyc…

A slain @nypd police officer was remembered as a hero 54 years after his death: police officers and military veterans gathered to rededicate a new headstone for Patrolman Rocco Laurie, which acknowledges his service in the NYPD and the @marines. Laurie was 23 years old when he and his partner, Patrolman Gregory Foster, 22, were shot to death by members of the Black Liberation Army while on patrol in the East Village on Jan. 27, 1972. Previously, reports @paulakatinas, the headstone listed only Laurie’s name, his birth year and the year he died. thetablet.org/patrolman-rocc…

Queens natives Brandon and Justin Silva grew up playing soccer before becoming standout athletes at @stfrancisprep1 in Fresh Meadows. Now, they're giving back to their alma mater as assistant coaches while serving in law enforcement. ⚽ But for the first time, the brothers are also getting the chance to play competitively on the same team. Brandon, an NYPD officer, and Justin, an MTA police officer, are both starters for @nypdfootball, which recently captured its seventh North American Police Soccer Tournament championship in Calgary. The brothers also helped lead the team to a 3-1 victory over the FDNY in the annual Ford Classic at @stjohnsu. Despite their five-year age difference keeping them from playing together growing up, the Silvas are now sharing the field while inspiring the next generation of Catholic school athletes, @jmmancari reports. thetablet.org/prep-soccer-co…

Hundreds of Catholics lined the sidewalks of Dyker Heights for the opportunity to venerate first-class relics of St. Bernadette of Lourdes in the @brooklyndiocese. The relics of the 19th-century French saint arrived at the Shrine Church of St. Bernadette as part of a nationwide pilgrimage making more than 140 stops through fall 2027. Inside the church, visitors touched rosaries and medals to the reliquary containing fragments of the saint's bones, hair, muscle and skin. Stones from the grotto in Lourdes, France, where the Blessed Mother appeared to St. Bernadette in 1858, were also on display, @jesseasthopetv reports. thetablet.org/highlights/vid…

Today, October 22, we celebrate the feast day of St. John Paul II. Born Karol Józef Wojtyła in Poland in 1920, he became pope in 1978, making history as the first non-Italian pontiff in more than 450 years. During his nearly 27-year papacy, St. John Paul II traveled the world, championed human dignity, defended religious freedom, and inspired generations of young Catholics through the creation of World Youth Day. Known for his powerful message, “Be not afraid,” he encouraged the faithful to place their trust in Christ, even in times of uncertainty. Canonized in 2014, St. John Paul II remains one of the most influential figures in modern Church history.

Sometimes, it only takes something small to change the way we see an ordinary moment. 💐 In this week's Up Front & Personal, Lucia A. Silecchia reflects on a summer subway ride that became unexpectedly memorable after a bouquet of flowers sparked smiles, conversation and kindness among strangers. She writes about the beauty we often overlook in everyday life, and how noticing it can lead us toward gratitude, hope and a deeper appreciation for the people around us. thetablet.org/finding-beauty…

Pope Leo XIV will not need additional cancer treatment following his recent lung surgery. In an Oct. 21 health update, Vatican officials announced that final tests confirmed the pope's tumor was a localized lung adenocarcinoma and that further oncological treatment is not necessary. Pope Leo underwent surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Oct. 13, during which doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung. While Pope Leo will still require long-term monitoring for any signs of recurrence, the latest update marks a positive development in his recovery. thetablet.org/pope-leo-needs…
