'Big' John McCarthy weighs in on the highly debated back-of-the-head strikes in Ciryl Gane x Alex Pereira: "I'm telling you right now, I've watched that too many times... There were a couple in there that I thought he did get hit [illegally]. If, while you're in the act of trying to go after your opponent, they move their head and it hits them square in what that illegal area is, you're gonna hear me call out your name, and you're gonna hear me tell you, 'Watch the back of the head.' I can't expect you to stop that mid-throw, but I don't want you to come with a second one. I want you to either switch hands, come over the top, switch directions and tools—don't come back with a second shot. You saw Ciryl Gane going after his opponent. Do I think Ciryl Gane is a dirty fighter? No, I don't. I think, at times, he becomes reckless when he's got the opportunity to end the fight. He starts to just wail, and it happens. We can't sit there and create a foul based upon the person moving their position as somebody is throwing. I thought Ciryl Gane was attempting, throughout most of it, to absolutely be legal in targeting the right area."
