One of the biggest mistakes I made as a hitter was stepping into the batter's box without a plan.
I was simply reacting to whatever the pitcher threw.
Now, don't get me wrong.
Reacting is part of hitting.
But one thing I learned was the importance of ANTICIPATION.
And here's the interesting part...
You're probably already doing it without realizing it.
Think about counts like 0-0, 2-0, 3-1, or 3-2.
Depending on the pitcher, you might anticipate a fastball because there's a good chance one is coming.
But what if you took that a step further?
What if you knew not only WHAT pitch you wanted, but WHERE you wanted it?
And what if that location was where you consistently hit the baseball the hardest?
Now you're stepping into the box with a plan to do damage.
That's what I call being selectively aggressive.
And it's why I developed my 4 Core Quadrants for hitting:
1. STUDY
Identify which pitches you consistently drive the hardest.
Not every strike is a pitch you can hit with authority.
Know your strengths.
2. STRATEGIZE
Use what you know about yourself, the pitcher, and the count to anticipate the pitch you want.
If you crush fastballs up in the zone, look for opportunities to attack that pitch.
3. STRIKE
When you get your pitch, DON'T MISS IT.
I once stepped into an at-bat hunting a fastball up in the zone.
First pitch, I got exactly what I wanted.
I drove it over the fence.
I still had to recognize the pitch and execute my swing, but I was prepared for it.
4. SCUFFLE
What happens when you don't get your pitch?
You adjust. You fight.
With two strikes, your priority changes from hunting your favorite pitch to protecting the zone and competing.
Don't give away the at-bat.
Here's something you can try today:
During batting practice, pay attention to which pitch locations produce your hardest contact.
Then build your approach around those strengths.
Because here's what I wish I understood earlier in my career:
The more you know what you're looking for, the more certain and confident you become at the plate.
And when you're confident in your plan, you can stop second-guessing yourself and start trusting your ability to react.
You won't always get the pitch you want.
But when you do, you'll be ready.
Hope this helps,
Jermaine Curtis

Your foul balls are telling the pitcher something.
Late on a fastball? You’re more likely to see another one.
Pull it foul? The next pitch tends to be off-speed.
Same hitter, same count, different foul ball, different pitch selection.
A foul ball is information, not just a strike, and most pitchers are using it to decide what to throw you next.

Hitters: BE ON GO!
Think: YES. YES. NO.
Anticipate getting YOUR pitch in YOUR zone.
You’re not waiting to decide whether you should swing.
You’re preparing to swing until the baseball tells you NOT TO.
The TAKE is the decision.
Yes - I’m hitting
Yes - I’m hitting
No - that’s not my pitch
Too many hitters operate:
No. No. Maybe…
And then they're late when the pitch they wanted actually shows up.
Be ready to hit. Hunt your pitch. Let the ball stop you.
Be on GO!
