We sincerely appreciate members of the #FormosaClub for their visit to Taiwan. There is ample opportunity for Europe and Taiwan to deepen their industrial and R&D cooperation. With reliable and trusted partners, we can safeguard our democratic future.
I’m in Taiwan with the #FormosaClub, bringing together colleagues from the European Parliament and national parliaments across Europe to deepen cooperation with Taiwan.
Today, we visited the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), where defence research becomes weapons, equipment and production capacity.
Europe needs more of that capacity. Credible deterrence depends on being able to produce, repair and replace equipment when it is needed. That takes engineers, secure components and supply chains that hold up under pressure.
Closer cooperation with Taiwan offers opportunities for joint research, investment and industrial partnerships. We should use them to strengthen European defence industries, diversify suppliers and reduce dependencies that others could turn against us.
As parliamentarians, our job is to help bring the right people together and remove unnecessary obstacles to cooperation. The test is what that cooperation delivers: reliable technology, stronger industries and equipment our armed forces can count on.
Thank you to our hosts for the welcome. Europe must take greater responsibility for its defence. Working with partners who take their own security seriously is part of that.
Thank you MEP @RihardsKols for your continued support for closer Europe-Taiwan cooperation in the strategic Al and drone sectors. Taiwan is a trusted partner for Europe; together we can work to strengthen our economic and national security.
Honoured to open today’s Trusted Technology Forum for Democracies in Taipei, exploring closer Europe-Taiwan cooperation on AI and drone technologies.
Deepening these ties can help us diversify supply chains, strengthen our industries and create opportunities for investment and innovation. Our task is to bring businesses, researchers and investors together and make cooperation easier.
Thank you @MOFA_Taiwan and our #FormosaClub partners for bringing us together. In increasingly dangerous times, Europe needs stronger capabilities and closer ties with partners we can rely on.

No one should face violence for speaking their mind. #Taiwan🇹🇼 strongly condemns #China's transnational repression following the indictment of 5 suspects in an alleged plot to harm a Taiwanese performer critical of the #CCP. Democracies must stand together against intimidation.

Constructive talks on the future of the Indo-Pacific 🇹🇼🇪🇺
Yesterday, I met with Joseph Wu, Secretary-General of Taiwan’s National Security Council (NSC), at the European Parliament.
Our meeting focused on a constructive exchange of views on the current situation in the Indo-Pacific and geopolitical developments in the region.
Especially at a time of growing international tensions, direct dialogue, mutual understanding, and the exchange of different perspectives are essential. Stability, security, and peace in the Indo-Pacific are also in Europe’s interest.
Good policymaking begins with dialogue, listening, and understanding the perspectives of others. This meeting was a valuable contribution to that effort.

"Because China's authoritarian ideology is fundamentally incompatible with Europe's democracy, dependence on China is not merely an economic risk, it's a threat to European freedom and sovereignty itself,"

On the occasion of Taiwan’s National Day, I send my warmest greetings to the people of Taiwan! 🇹🇼
Taiwan demonstrates every day how a society can stand up for democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, even under challenging circumstances. These shared values also form the strong foundation of the close partnership between Taiwan and Europe.
Just recently, we came together at a reception to mark National Day, which once again reflected the close friendship and bond between Taiwan and the European Union.
Today, I wish all the people of Taiwan a cheerful and peaceful National Day! Happy Double Ten Day!
We welcome the clear message in the European Parliament’s recommendation on EU-China political relations: opposing any unilateral action that seeks to change the status quo by force or coercion, or against the will of the #Taiwanese people.
