Why isn’t there a separation of VAT rates from Irish hotels (in the main - thriving) and cafés and restaurants (struggling). I know this has been presented to Gov but doing nothing to the rate as per the budget yesterday is a disaster. @SimonHarrisTD @RAI_ie
Sean Collender from @KinaraGroupIRL on @VirginMediaNews last night in reaction to #Budget2025. So many food businesses are under pressure and closing daily yet no return to the lower VAT rate for restaurants. @jackfchambers @SimonHarrisTD @RAI_ie

Speaking yesterday at the National Economic Dialogue - which forms a key part of the budgetary process - the CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, @AdrianCummins, urged the Minister for Finance and Minister for Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform to ensure that Budget 2025 is a pro-SME Budget. When it comes to small, independent restaurants, cafés and other food-led hospitality businesses, the only show in town is a reinstatement of the 9% VAT rate, Cummins told the forum, calling on the Ministers to take meaningful action to stem the current tide of SME closures across the country.

It is vital that the Government reinstate the 9% VAT for food led businesses, the 9% VAT has been in place for over 10years, bring it back. #vat9 @RAI_ie
All across the country, the survival of Ireland’s small, independent restaurants and cafés - the heart of so many communities - has become a major election issue. The reinstatement of the 9% VAT rate for food-led businesses is the only way our industry can become viable again.

With the brilliant news today that Northsides Dublin’s Victorian fruit and veg market is finally getting redeveloped for €25 million, five years after closing, here's a quick look at its history. "Obedient citizens make a happy city!" or so says the coat of arms above the market on Mary's Lane. A timely threat given recent sinister masked policing. The beautiful main entrance also has female representations of Justice and Commerce. The market was completed by Messrs Harrison & Sons of Great Brunswick Street on April 1st 1894 at a cost of £19,000. Its terracota arches are decorated with stone carvings of fruit, veg, and seafood by artist Charles Harrison.
