If you're writing a book set in rural Scotland and all your characters go by their given names, I hate to break it to ya, but you're doing your readers a disservice.
Here's some examples of real people all from one village around 1900-1930: 🧵

The ‘godfather’ of AI Geoffrey Hinton warns it’s not inconceivable AI could lead to the extinction of the human race.
AI researcher & expert Connor Leahy @NPCollapse fears it’s worse than that: “It’s quite likely, unfortunately.”
“We do not know how to control these things.”
Everyone should read Max’s article.
Most people I speak to suffer from combo of normalcy + survivorship bias when discussing AI; lots of “oh, but jacquard looms/printing press/automation/internet etc. etc.”
I keep being told that history is cyclical by people working to a timescale of “history” as post-Industrial revolution and who ignore concept of singularity/previous mass-extinctions/current extinctions/entropy etc.
And lots of people aren’t even aware of what’s happening! There should be massive public discourse. Need the equivalent of Greta Thunberg for AGI to step forward…
Humanity's lackadaisical response to the superintelligence threat makes me feel I'm in the movie "Don't Look Up". I just explained why here: time.com/6273743/thinking-th…

This is real and true. The most imminent threat facing the existence of humanity is AGI.
All political activists should be focussed on global AI regulation. Otherwise we all die #shutitdown

I had no money growing up. My dad was a labourer and my mum did everything to make ends meet. Men worked hard. Women worked miracles. But education was free. As was the local library. I knew books were my passport to a better life. #SupportLibraries

@TalulahRiley I thoroughly enjoyed your new book this weekend. Laughed throughout and some parts about children hit pretty close to home. Good luck with the revolution. Here's a shot of your new baby in the wild for your collection and a... thematic illustration for fun. 😉
Have loved being in Canterbury. Book-in-hand Marlowe, with a couple of days to rehearse. Playing a fallen spirit. Fun.
