Lost a long time client today (inherited from previous firm owners). They don't feel comfortable with the direction I am taking the firm. Not a complaint about my quality, but they haven't liked the extensions the last few years (thanks Congress and Indiana Legislature) and they don't like my move to a portal (even though I'm not forcing it on them -- yet). They didn't like that we are forcing them to e-file 941 & 940 forms....(Again, not my call. They have over 10 information returns; they were my last holdout). The change is just too much over the last 5 years and I think they found an "old soul" to get the stuff done more the way they want. We talk about cutting clients. We talk about firing them. But when you've had a relationship for 17 years you become more than a transaction. And it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. I'm not worried about the finances. The new client requests do not stop. 3 new ones in the last 12 hours on the website. My thoughts go to the relationship. I can't help but take it personally sometimes. Nevertheless, we must move forward.
