HOT TAKE: Some adults need to stop talking kids out of Division III football.
“D3 doesn’t give athletic scholarships.”
“You’re going to go into debt.”
“Why would you play there if you can go D2?”
“You won’t get NIL”
Okay.
Now tell me the FINAL cost of attendance.
Tell me the academic aid package.
Tell me the grants.
Tell me the major.
Tell me the graduation rate.
Tell me what that degree can do for him.
Tell me what the D2 school actually costs AFTER the athletic scholarship.
Because a $15,000 athletic scholarship at one school can still leave a family paying more than a D3 school offering $0 in athletic money.
D3 isn’t automatically the right choice.
But neither is D1 or D2.
You dismissing an opportunity because of the division beside the school’s name is lazy recruiting advice.
Evaluate the opportunity and get an understanding of the whole picture

Your role is different than your value.

Annual PSA: the average height in the NBA is 6’6.6 and college basketball is 6’5
All 6’0 - 6’6 forwards & posts playing HS basketball do not put all your eggs in one basket unless you’re ELITE (already having offers) and report to the nearest HS FB coach immediately

Many years ago, we had an incredible football player who loved playing basketball and he also ran track.
In one week Pete Carroll of USC and Charlie Weiss of Notre Dame were in my office, offering him scholarships. In front of the student athlete I asked both of them if he should not play basketball his senior year. Both of them look puzzled and said we want our guys to play basketball and run track.
If the coaches at Notre Dame and USC are good with their potential running backs playing multiple sports so should current day high school and club coach coaches.
