BioWare's founding members were recently graduated doctors. Yes, actual doctors. They pooled together about $300,000 and started the studio out of a basement.
Game development wasn't even their primary job at first. They just happened to know a bit of coding from developing medical software and one of them had some artistic talent. They eventually turned that experience into one of gaming's most legendary studios.
