Thank you to Progress for bringing their energy & generosity to our Hope Bag packing day at the Balalaika Hotel in Sandton! Every Hope Bag is a reminder to a survivor of rape or abuse that they are not alone. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making hope tangible.
As we close off #ThriveAtTEARS, we take away valuable lessons on resilience, mindset, opportunity & motivation.
Thank you to Gaven Sinclair & Zandi Mathe-Nhleko for reminding us that we can overcome, succeed & choose to thrive.

Investment in forensic capacity matters, but survivors also need trained frontline personnel, safe shelters and timely support. We cannot investigate our way out of a crisis we are failing to prevent. iol.co.za/the-star/news/2026…
In South Africa, the recent stream of news about violence, crime and GBV can leave us feeling anxious, angry and emotionally exhausted.
You don’t have to read every headline, watch every video or follow every update.
Take a break. Mute what overwhelms you.
TEARS Foundation founder Mara Glennie warns that police vacancies, emergency vehicle shortages, forensic and court backlogs, and underfunded shelters undermine the response to GBV.
Frontline capacity saves lives.

You don’t have to be ready to leave before you can ask for help.
There may be many reasons you feel unable or not ready to leave. You can still talk to someone, understand your options and think about what feels safest for you.
Support doesn’t have to start with leaving.
Feeling safe can sometimes feel like something we have to work for. Checking the back seat. Sharing your location. Calling when you get home. Watching who is around you. Staying alert, even when you’re exhausted. You shouldn’t have to live in survival mode. #MentalHealth
Celeste Louw, general operations manager at the Tears Foundation, said making offenders’ names and photographs public was not, in itself, an effective child protection strategy.

When fear kicks in, it can feel like your body goes into survival mode. In a country where safety is something many of us think about every day, that fear can be difficult to switch off. Take a moment. Breathe. Reach out to someone you trust.

In SA, protecting girls cannot only mean teaching them how to stay safe. It also means creating homes, schools, communities and public spaces where they can actually feel safe. Girls deserve a childhood, not a lifetime of learning how to survive. #IntDayoftheGirlChild
