"Satchel Paige had a very, very good fastball...... But the first time I faced Satchel, he threw me a little breaking ball just to see what I could do, and I hit it off the top of the fence. I got a double. When I got to second base, Satchel told the third baseman: "Let me know when that little boy comes back up." Three innings later, I go to kneel down in the on-deck circle and I hear the third baseman say: "There he is." Satch looked at the third baseman, and then he looked at me. I walk halfway to home plate and he says: "Little boy." I say: "Yes, sir?" because Satch was much older than I am, so I was trying to show respect. Satch walked halfway to home plate and said: "Little boy, I'm not going to trick you. I'm going to throw you three fastballs and you're going to go sit down." And I'm saying in my mind: "I DOOON'T THINK SOOO" If Satch threw me three of the same pitch, I'm going to hit it somewhere. I turned to the catcher and asked: "What does he mean?" The catcher told me: "He’s going to throw you three fast balls. Nothing else." Satchel threw me two fastballs and I just swung....... I swung right through it....... And the third ball he threw, and I tell people this all the time, he threw the ball and as he let go Satchel said: "Go sit down." This is while the ball was in the air!! Yes, he struck me out with three pitches. He was just magnificent." 17 year old Willie Mays.

The owners of the franchise prior to the 80’s …. I feel so unfamiliar with them… Found out this week that there are senators fans on facebook who are still mad at the owner who moved the team to Texas.. Bob Short.. I can totally understand why they would feel so strongly against him.. I respect them for still disliking the guy 55 years later.. ⚾️👍 Texas Rangers (franchise, 1961–present as expansion Washington Senators → Texas Rangers in 1972) principal/majority owners, first to current: 1. Elwood Richard “Pete” Quesada — 1961–1963 2. James Johnston & James Lemon — 1963–1967 • James Lemon (sole) — 1967–December 3, 1968 3. Robert E. “Bob” Short — December 3, 1968–May 29, 1974 (moved the team from Washington, D.C., to Arlington, Texas, for the 1972 season) 4. Bradford G. “Brad” Corbett — May 29, 1974–April 29, 1980 5. H.E. “Eddie” Chiles — April 29, 1980–March 18, 1989 6. George W. Bush / Edward W. “Rusty” Rose Partnership — March 18, 1989–June 16, 1998 • (J. Thomas “Tom” Schieffer succeeded Bush as general partner in November 1994) 7. Thomas O. “Tom” Hicks — June 16, 1998–August 11, 2010 8. Rangers Baseball Express, LLC — August 12, 2010–present • Current principal ownership is led by Ray C. Davis (managing partner/majority owner and co-chairman) and Bob R. Simpson (co-chairman). Early in the group’s tenure, Chuck Greenberg and Nolan Ryan had more prominent day-to-day roles before Davis took the lead as the primary controlling figure.

Grok bot update: Here's today's Rangers summary for Friday, Nov 6. The only news was on the labor front. Player agents told The Athletic they're furious about Commissioner Rob Manfred's push for a salary cap and about the league planning a lockout ahead of time. MLB answered that fans support a cap. No new offer was made, so the latest proposal is still the Nov 3 one, which delays the cap until 2028. [SBJ summary of The Athletic report](sportsbusinessjournal.com/Ar…)

"I was faster than Sandy Koufax but once he got control, he had better control than I did. I never saw Walter Johnson, but he might have been faster than me. I’ll take Bill Klem’s word for it. Nolan Ryan’s fastball was timed at 100.9 miles an hour and he can throw as hard as anybody for a few pitches. The thing about Ryan is that he’s kept his speed even into his 30’s. That’s remarkable. But he’s inconsistent. He should win 25 games every year just by throwing his glove on the mound. If I could do it over again, I would have worked on my control a lot more. Half the games I lost, I lost because of a walk. I was wilder than I should’ve been." Bob Feller. "Bob Feller's blazing fastball set the standard against which all of his successors have been judged. "Rapid Robert" spent his entire 18-year career with Cleveland, amassing 266 victories and 2,581 strikeouts, while leading the league in strikeouts seven times. Feller missed nearly four full seasons in his prime serving his country during WWII, for which he was decorated with five campaign ribbons, studded with eight battle stars. Fresh from high school, Feller struck out 17 Athletics in 1936. The fireballer authored three no-hitters and TWELVE one-hitters while winning 20 or more games six times." Cleveland Indians ace Bob Feller delivers to 19 yr old Yankees Rookie Mickey Mantle, during a 1951 game at Yankee Stadium.

Sad but probably the right move. If they do to, I want statues of evo and seager out front. Evo was nails and seager has the biggest individual moment in Rangers history.

⚠️ Lockout watch: On Nov 3, MLB offered to push its proposed salary cap and floor back to 2028. The cap would be $258.3M and the floor $180.2M, and the current luxury tax and revenue sharing would stay in place for 2027. The players’ union says the cap is just as harmful as before. The current deal expires Dec 1, and owners are widely expected to lock players out then, which would freeze trades and free-agent signings. Sources: AP report, MLBPA statement, CBS negotiations timeline (Nov 3, around 1:40pm CST).

Politicians in Washington tried for decades to retire the A-10 Warthog attack jet, calling it too slow and outdated. Then U.S. Air Force Captain Kim Campbell flew hers home from Baghdad with zero hydraulics, one damaged engine, and over one hundred and fifty shrapnel holes in the tail. On April 7, 2003, American ground troops were pinned down under heavy fire in the middle of Baghdad. Twenty-seven-year-old Captain Campbell dove through thick clouds to deliver close air support with her thirty-millimeter cannon. As she pulled up after saving the troops on the ground, an Iraqi surface-to-air missile exploded directly against the rear of her aircraft. The blast severed both of her redundant hydraulic lines at the same time, punched a football-sized hole through the right tail stabilizer, and damaged her right jet engine. Instantly, the flight stick went dead. The nose of the aircraft rolled violently toward the streets of Baghdad below. Why did she not pull the ejection handle? Because ejecting over central Baghdad meant parachuting straight into the hands of hostile militia, and forcing dozens of American soldiers to risk their lives in an urban ambush just to rescue her. Sitting inside the A-10's twelve-hundred-pound titanium armor tub, Campbell flipped a single emergency switch on her console called Manual Reversion. That switch locked the flight stick directly to physical steel cables, pulleys, and cranks running through the wings. Flying an A-10 on steel cables is like steering a heavy dump truck with no power steering at three hundred miles per hour. For one full hour across three hundred miles of hostile sky, Campbell hauled the heavy stick with both hands using sheer muscle power. The hardest part was landing. Without hydraulics, she had no wing flaps to slow down, no speed brakes, and no nose-wheel steering. If she touched down and the tires blew, the jet would cartwheel in flames. She brought the crippled Warthog down onto the runway at nearly two hundred miles per hour, fighting the rudder pedals with her legs until the battered aircraft rolled to a stop. When her crew chief climbed the ladder and saw hundreds of holes in the aluminum skin, he could only shake his head in disbelief. Never mock old American steel, and never bet against the pilot sitting inside it.
