google just announced US$15B (~RM61B) for malaysia, 2027 to 2028. that's 7.5x the $2B they pledged in 2024 🇲🇾 some bullish numbers: 1 | google will pay 100% of its own power costs and the grid connection infra, and add 1GW+ of clean energy to the national grid. looks like the "data centres will drain our grid" complaints were heard 2 | per google's own numbers: 37,000 local jobs a year while building (only ~6,000 of them actual construction), then 9,000+ jobs once it's running, paying 45% above the national median. median is RM2,940, so that's roughly RM4.3k a month 3 | new campuses in selangor and N9, on top of elmina which is already running 4 | four programmes to upskill 800,000 malaysians over 5 years zoom out: this keeps happening for a reason. singapore paused new data centre builds in 2019, and by 2020 they were eating 7% of its electricity. that demand had to land somewhere. then TNB's green lane cut grid connection time from 3-4 years to ~12 months👏 anyway here's my question: google's data center institutes at our polytechnics start in 2027 with a 10-week course. is 10 weeks enough to run a hyperscale data centre? 🤔
