Recruits / Parents The category "D1" is basically a label. It doesn't tell you the level of play or skill level of players, it's just a label that defines into what group a college plays. There are D2 / D3 soccer teams that are better / more talented than some D1 schools.

Parents/Recruits 350 women's D1 programs (x 28) = 9,800 rostered D1 women's soccer players The number going "pro" is negligible (and even some "pro" will need a second job to pay rent) Find the best academic school you can - you'll "go pro" in something other than soccer

PLEASE ... If you're on your club's sixth U16 team (top two are ECNL, second two are ECRL, last two are NPL, and you're on that bottom NPL team with a losing record) ... odds are pretty solid that you will NOT, despite what your coach recently practically promised, play D1 soccer

Recruits / Parents For those who don't know, there's overlap between level of play of some D1 teams and D2/D3 teams. Many think all D1 teams are better than all D2 teams, that are all better than D3 teams. Not so much (box plot below) (Massey isn't perfect, but gets the job done)

Recruits/Parents: "D1 level athlete" is not a clear description of anything. There is a canyon-sized gap between ability of players on the top D1 teams and the bottom D1 teams - but both are "D1 athletes". Many D2/D3 athletes are "D1-level", just not playing on bottom D1 teams

Some numbers and stats on playing time from freshman and sophomores at top D1 programs. Lots of stuff to unpack

They're just numbers, and averages don't tell the stories attached to individual players, but they're factual and paint an honest picture of experiences from a bunch of freshman on top D1 programs. Good information to have when you're considering your options.
