This evening we honored the rich, multiracial history of baseball in Knoxville with the unveiling of seven statues celebrating the legacy of the Knoxville Giants, the Payne Avenue Little League (the city’s first Black Little League team) and other African American pioneers in the Negro Southern League. Sculptor Brian Hanlon reminds us how far we’ve come and who helped get us here. A special shoutout to Rev. Reneé Kesler of @TheBeckCenter, whose leadership helped ensure the historical authenticity of Hanlon’s work. We’re so proud that Covenant Health Park will be home to this permanent tribute. Thank you to @MayorKincannon, Council Member Gwen McKenzie, and Commissioner @Damon_Rawls for joining us in this celebration. A new era of Knoxville baseball begins next week- but tonight, we honor those who laid the foundation!

@ArtUTK's Prof. Mary Campbell presented some of her fascinating research today as part of our Chandler Seminar series! She is using her time at the UTHC to focus on her wonderful project on Knoxville's own Beauford Delaney (1901-1979). Thank you Prof Campbell!

We’re lucky to have the @TheBeckCenter, a modern storehouse of African American culture, in Knoxville. Since 1975, it has been a key piece of the community, preserving Knoxville history for future generations to come & learn. Thx to Rev. Renee Kesler for giving us the grand tour.
