I don’t believe the Detmers portion of this to be true at all (sorry, @Michael_Cerami — you’re still the man!). Angels ask at the deadline for Detmers—as it has been for a while—is gargantuan. Cubs-Detmers talks never progressed far at all.
Phil's sources say Angels and Mets rejected prospect medicals leading to Cubs acquiring Holmes and Zeferjahn, but not Detmers

Tarik Skubal to Chicago isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. 💰 The Cubs have the money, the need, and some intriguing connections to the ace. @PJ_Mooney explains why they shouldn't be counted out.

The Cubs struck out the third least in the NL. The Cubs had the best defense in baseball by a mile. The Cubs had the 6th most steals in the NL. All well and good, but unfortunately for the Cubs, (1) pitching is also important, and (2) anything can happen in 2 playoff games.
Got to build a team like the Rays -Contact over power -Defense over Offense -Speed Do that and the Yankees might win the ALE one year Chance the Yankees change their philosophy 0.0%

Against MLB playoff teams in 2026
Replying to @IvyFutures
Putting up double figures against shitty teams (while still not getting clutch hits) does not make you an elite offense. They don't get to play the bottom feeders in the playoffs.

The part of the Cubs pitcher development story that doesn’t get enough play (because it’s long, slow, complicated), and is potentially the actual biggest factor in the failing? The Cubs have been ABYSMAL in pitcher International Free Agency for 15(!) years.

Jed’s presser today was heavily focused on pitching. That’s the right call. Offense was elite across the board this year. They need to add to the pitching corps. There are smart folks in house so add more quality pitchers to the roster. It’s not about depth anymore; add top arms.

Shota Imanaga shows his love for Cubs fans: "For that (first) press conference, I remember writing down on a piece of paper what I was gonna say in English. I still have it. I still walk around with it ... even this year when I've had bad outings ... the next day when I'm going out into the bullpen, in the bleachers, everyone stood up and cheered for me. I have so much appreciation for the fans of Chicago." 🫶

The Cubs had the 7th best record in baseball out of 30 teams. The 3rd best run differential. If you want to argue that there should be only 4 or 6 total playoff teams, hey, fine, make THAT argument. Don't say stupid, unsupportable shit like "this was a bad team outside of PCA."

As is too often the case #OnHere, a lot of folks are confusing the word "can" for the word "will." No predictions are being made. Only recognition that baseball is frequently interested in defying your predictions.
The Cubs can win this series in San Diego. The Cubs can win a series after that, another after that, and a final one after that. There's nothing in the laws of physics that says it is impermissible for the unlikely to occur. We see unlikely things in baseball every day.

The Cubs offense has been the best in MLB by a lot. But since August 1st, they have been the least "clutch." AKA, their hitters have been terrible in high-leverage compared to their usual performance. The Good? Clutch isn't predictive, no matter how much it FEELS like it is.

Pete Crow-Armstrong's 81 RBIs out of leadoff spot this season set a Cubs record dating to at least 1898, per team historian Ed Hartig. He had his 6th game this year with 10+ total bases, tying Nelson Cruz in 2019 for most such games in a single season in MLB history (since 1900)
