From my recent guest article in @Sundial_CU. The only way for CODA to get on the right track is for more courageous, more principled students to take the lead.

ICYMI, Clayton Smith — former @Sundial_CU senior editor and founder of the Columbia Open Discourse Alliance — on the sad evolution of his brainchild. It’s now an organization that condemns, ehem, yours truly, for perpetuating “rape culture.” sundial-cu.org/p/i-founded-c…

Awesome to have Clay back in our pages. On how the Columbia “Open Discourse” Alliance, which he founded, has betrayed its mission in condemning me and @Christina_ma4’s recent @Sundial_CU essay on the “Cornell 7” for “promot[ing] rape culture” & “work[ing] to silence survivors.”
My friends at @Sundial_CU invited me to write a guest essay about how The Columbia Open Discourse Alliance (CODA) has fallen well short of it's founding principles. (I should know, I founded it!). sundial-cu.org/p/i-founded-c…

I Founded CODA. It Has Betrayed Its Mission. Former Sundial staff editor Clayton Smith returns to argue that the Columbia Open Discourse Alliance, which he founded, has abdicated its mission in condemning a recent Sundial essay on the “Cornell Seven.” Link in comments.

I really hope to see more young men stand up for what they believe in. It’s a mark of true masculinity to remain steadfast in one’s convictions. We must lead by example! I have the utmost respect for @Nikos_Mohammadi for doing this with me.
"A lot of very left-leaning young women date very right-wing guys. I think its that... confidence and that conviction in their beliefs that makes a man masculine and attractive." #conservative #liberal #dating #masculinity #podcast

Thank you @WSJ for covering what's happening at Columbia! A disappointing moment for free speech on campus. It all feels very meta—the outcry we've seen is exactly what we warned about in our article. wsj.com/us-news/education/a-…

On agency, accountability, sexual trauma, and the gray areas in-between @TheDiscourseLab
Does our culture encourage young women to interpret unpleasant consensual sexual experiences as something much darker? Does trauma always equal victimhood? What do YOU think? #regret #women #trauma #victimhood #podcast

Thank you Clay for having us on! Really enjoyed speaking with you and appreciate having the opportunity to share our side of the story
New episode with Nikos Mohammadi & Christina Ma out now! We discuss their recent article on the Cornell 7, the intense backlash they faced, and how they were betrayed by an organization ostensibly dedicated to open discourse.

Last week, two Columbia students dared to offer a dissenting opinion on the Cornell case—they got death threats and were told they should not be allowed to speak. @Nikos_Mohammadi and Christina Ma argued no more than that students should think before arriving at sweeping conclusions about a complex case, and that it was infantilizing to suggest women could not make decisions they might later regret. None of their detractors have so-far been able to offer a coherent response to their arguments—except making personal attacks and saying they should not be allowed to speak. In that regard, they've already won the argument. My latest in @CityJournal here: city-journal.org/article/cor…

This @ColumbiaSpec op-ed tries to make our essay political when it wasn’t. “Liberal” and “hyper-liberal” here (obviously) was not a reference to political affiliation, but to culture; and I don’t think I’m exactly the “conservative” this author has mind. columbiaspectator.com/opinio…

My friend @shoshanaaufzien disagrees with me on the “Cornell Seven.” And she’s just written a fantastic defense of @Sundial_CU for publishing my take. Sundial will not “cease organizational operations.” It will continue defending free expression. sundial-cu.org/p/now-its-rea…

Columbia “open discourse” club cancels panel on “press freedom” after a panelists’ magazine publishes an unpopular view on the Cornell 7. Seems like many college students never stopped believing words = violence. Woke 1 still going strong!

Students supported Mao Students supported Castro Students supported Khomeini Students supported Hitler Students supported Mussolini If find yourself blindly supporting every student lead movement, you’ll be wrong very often, in many eras, on many issues.
A good rule of history: if you find yourself opposing a student movement while siding with the ruling class, you're wrong. Every time, in every era, whatever the issue.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Student movements have not always been on the right side of history. Mao's student Red Guards persecuted hundreds of thousands. Students helped Castro and Khomeini rise to power, and Nazi student groups opposed the Weimar Republic. britannica.com/topic/Red-Guar… encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art… aei.org/education/actu…
