I'm talking to people - Sony is currently being inundated with emails and messages behind the scenes from smaller publishers and devs voicing their displeasure over the end of physical games.
I'm actually kinda shocked just how much internal backlash there has been to this.
Doubt it'll make a difference, this was apparently a decision made by the money men within the last two months, is 100% influenced by component costs & manufacturing (AI ruining everything again)
They know nobody will buy a $1000+ PS6
They have calculated that the only way the PS6 makes business sense for them right now in terms of margins is to kill both the retail and resale market. Furthermore, they figure people are invested enough in the ecosystem that they're locked-in for life.
They fully expected a huge backlash and took it into account, but they think the anger won't amount to much in terms of real financial losses and are willing to take the PR hit.
Of the 15% of the current PlayStation audience that buy physical, they expect only 2-3% of people not to move over to fully-digital upon being forced.
The money saved by getting rid of the retailer cut, and lost on the reseller market eclipses that 2-3% and makes up for their miniscule profit expected per PS6 sold. (they will not sell it at a loss, but are willing to only make as little as $50 per unit sold)
The only way they'd ever reverse this decision is if the 2-3% of physical audience they expect to lose is instead around 8-10%+
As much as i'd love to see everyone come together and somehow force their hand with a mass boycott, I doubt it will happen.
They have been wanting to kill physical since around 2020, the AI RAMpocalypse has forced their hand.

I've always been excited about the next generation of consoles, but this time I feel incredibly numb to it all. Constant layoffs, price increases, and now no physical games? I have zero desire to even learn about "what's next", let alone part away with yet more money.

Video games get unnecessary hate.
I realize I’m a small minority on the RW adjacent side because I’ve always been pro video games but for good reason.
Gamers have immaculate taste in the arts.
Scrolling your phone is infinitely worse than playing a video game. I’ll never forget the first time I played Pokémon red version with my dad. It was a great bonding activity as a kid and instilled a competitive nature that helped me in all aspects of my life.
Or playing “The Last of Us” with my husband. Watching him discover video games for the first time through “Skyrim.”
Working with Nintendo at E3 each year to battle people from all over the world in the new Super Smash Brothers game.
The hatred of video games is a hatred of the best art of our generation. The most talented composers have gone to video games. The best storylines come from video games. All of the top creatives have gone to video games and they do infinitely more in revenue than the most successful films.
Playing video games from the age of 7-10, helped me in school. It made testing and memorization effortless.
What does DNA stand for? “Deoxyribonucleic Acid” obviously because Deoxys is the DNA pokémon.
What was the coin used in Ancient Greece? Drachma. I played “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.”
Scrolling on social media can destroy your creativity. It turns you into a consumer instead of a creator. Whereas video games require decision making and you to use your reflexes.
Also Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy is one of the most likable female characters ever. I WISH Hollywood would take note!
Video games are one of the most accessible ways men have to stay connected with each other.
Every game offers some version of a quest, an adventure you can go on without a plane ticket.
Most games feature multiplayer functions, so guys can meet up in person or sync up online—playing a few rounds in the living room, or logging on at the same time from different cities.
Either way, they're going on a mission together, and that matters.
It's not that different from us getting together for a movie night or a group chat that runs all evening.
The medium is different, but the need is the same.
Men deserve a space of their own, and video games are one of the best ones they've found.

I want to share a really cool moment at the gym today. As I’m finishing my last set a young man came up to me and this is what he said.
“My name is John and you may not remember me, but about 3-4 years ago you came up to me at the gym and told me I look great and took a few minutes to talk to me. You didn’t know it but I was going through a really hard time then. I had just broke up with my girlfriend and was in a really bad place. After you walked away I just sat there for five minutes in shock. You don’t know how much that meant to me and how much I needed that. Thank you.”
This is what the gym community is truly all about. I know it can be intimidating for some especially someone new to the gym. So, If you see someone working hard, beginner or not, take a moment to say “great job” or “keep up the hard work”. Tell someone you’re proud of them. You never know what they may be going through and how much a few words of support and kindness can do for them. Thank you John for reminding me of that and making my day brother. I needed it.
