I write about London’s old, strange and overlooked food places, and the people and stories behind them. Recent stops: a 400-year-old Holborn pub and an Austrian basement where an 88-year-old plays cowbells. Out every Sunday morning: thegreedydick.substack.com

Finally, a dating strategy I can get behind Fred Sirieix from First Dates calls this London’s most romantic restaurant, so I went to Mayfair for tapas to see whether the food lives up to it. thegreedydick.substack.com/p…

Why are influencers in restaurants so offensive? Sure, some are pricks. But why let someone else's filming spoil your dinner? Perhaps scornful people-watching is its own pleasure. If you're obsessing over strangers, who's really missing the experience?

I'm convinced the next generation will have a passion for traditional British food. It's only natural to cringe at what your parents cringed at. Steamed suet, meats wrapped in caul fat, pottages and syllabubs galore.

Last week, a Savoy bar announced an enormous selection of expensive wines by the glass, served using Coravin. This week, news emerged that Les 110 de Taillevent in Marylebone, famous for offering 110 wines by the glass, had closed.

I don't see the problem with AI-generated menus in restaurants. Look at this AI poster outside a local church. The vicar is probably passionate, busy, overstretched and without deep pockets to spend on designers. Much like most restaurateurs.

If you're new and don't know the menu, that's absolutely fine. But if you've invited me to review your restaurant, please find someone who does. Otherwise, we're both wasting our time.

The plot armour on this cafe is INSANE 💀 Ace Cafe survived a bomb, a tyre-shop era and a burst main. I tried its breakfast, ribs and pudding. thegreedydick.substack.com/p…

The Churchill Arms is drowning in Churchill memorabilia, AI slop, Live Laugh Love slogans and random crap. But much of its original character was probably someone's magpie taste. At what point does accumulated junk become heritage? And when should it stop?

Are Caesar salad wraps a travesty or an innovation? I genuinely can't decide.

A press event offered two cocktails, both made at a glacial pace. When I complained, the "head of people" called me miserable. Yes, the drinks were free. But I'd gone out of my way to see whether this business was interesting. I suppose I got my answer.

The Conservatives want to freeze the minimum wage for five years. But if the problem is that inexperienced young workers cost too much to employ, will a freeze be enough? Surely the question is how to make hiring them worthwhile in the first place.

If Ozempic is making thinness fashionable today, will fatness be fashionable in 2036?

Solis has graduated from Arcade to Kingly Street. Spanish croquetas, English prawn cocktail, Italian torta pasqualina. Odd concept, but the asador steak was excellent, blushing and practically mooing. The fit-out felt a little cheap. Interested to see how it settles in.

I've noticed that some of the most formidable female restaurant hosts have the most extravagantly pumped-up lips. What's the male equivalent?

Taberna at Legado is criminally overlooked. Pan con tomate £4, croquetas £5, sangria £10. Everything delicious. Only complaint? Those authentically shit Spanish paper napkins. My laptop still has honey all over it.

Michelin-starred food on a beer budget? Say less 🍷 Legado by Nieves Barragán has a Michelin star, but its casual Spanish taberna in Shoreditch offers £4 pan con tomate, £5 croquetas and £10 sangria.

Black Axe Mangal is returning, briefly, as a free sandwich shop. To advertise cream cheese. Was the anarchism performative all along?
