In teaching thermodynamics, in 2019, I gave a lecture on the ascent of sap in a tree, analyzed using the basic algorithm of thermodynamics (BAT). docs.google.com/document/d/1… A student in the class gave me a present—his drawing of a BAT on a tree.

It's out! No plastic variation between gardens in total stores, but a strong heritable difference between gardens in proportion of stores maintained as starch. Hmmm, maybe C stores aren't as plastic as we thought... onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Maintaining Professionalism In The Age of Black Death. By @GoldingGirl617 link.medium.com/ny4GWNOOZ6 If you have Black colleagues/students/mentors/mentees, please read this. If you don’t, please ask yourself why, & read this. This isn’t new: even when not on the news, it’s A Lot.
For some of my friends growing up the "way out" was sports or music. For others it was the military. For me, it turned out to be science. Through my undergrad, my PhD and now as a professor @UCLA, I've learned it can be difficult, and at times heartbreaking, to be #BlackInSTEM.

Every time one of us is rejected, beat down, dismissed, ridiculed, or murdered, I question why I am still in academia. This means I ask myself this question every day, many times a day. I love science, but justice is more important. And yet, it never comes.
