In 2015, Forbes valued Elizabeth Holmes at $4.5 billion. A year later, it revised her estimated fortune to zero.
Holmes left Stanford at 19 to build Theranos, promising hundreds of blood tests from a finger prick.
Investors poured in more than $700 million, pushing its valuation to $9 billion.
But the technology couldn’t deliver. Its machines produced unreliable results, and Theranos secretly relied on conventional equipment for much of its testing.
Whistleblowers and journalist John Carreyrou helped expose the deception.
In 2022, Holmes was convicted of defrauding investors and sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison.
A24’s new documentary, You Can See Everything, follows Holmes in the weeks before prison, after she invited filmmakers Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim into her home.
