Harold Russell, a WWII veteran who became an Oscar-winning actor, made a remarkable choice in 1992: he sold his Best Supporting Actor statuette for $60,500 to help pay for his wife’s eye surgery.
“I love the Oscar, but I love my wife more.”
He kept his honorary Oscar, awarded in recognition of the hope he brought to fellow veterans. Perhaps that tells us more about the man than any award ever could.
