This is a superthread of material related to the project I call an atheology of love, a moral and spiritual philosophy I'm developing around the idea that love can function as a source of subjective meaning and value on premises of atheism, naturalism, and moral error theory.
Ngl I just hate this crap. My purpose and dignity don't come from giving huge blocks of my life to making money for some corporation. My MONEY comes from that. I do manage to derive some meaning from my work as a cashier, but I have plenty else to do with that time that would be much more meaningful to me: reading, learning, thinking, writing, volunteering, activism, spending time with family and friends, enjoying music, the things that I'm making all of this money FOR. Why on earth would I need a job to give my life meaning?
New Oxford and Google DeepMind paper finds most workers value jobs beyond pay, so basic income alone may not offset AI job losses.
So plans for the AI transition should protect purpose, community, and dignity at work as well as income.
finds that about 75% of workers would quit if guaranteed 100% of their wage, yet 1 in 5 would refuse even 120%.
If AI automates many jobs, a common plan is a basic income that replaces lost wages. That plan works only if people work mainly for the money.
The author surveyed 8,234 working-age adults in the UK, US, Denmark, and India. Workers were sorted by what they value most in their job and asked what guaranteed income would make them quit.
Only 26% of classified workers valued their job mainly for pay, while one third valued the work itself. 20% would keep working even if offered 120% of their salary as guaranteed income, a share similar across income levels.
Once in a while someone reminds me that Ethan Klein exists and people are mad at him. I wonder if it is for the most boring drama imaginable. It is. Then I forget that Ethan Klein exists.
There's something magical about Peter and MJ. There's a reason we keep coming back to them. The power of two people at their best, being reasons for each other to go on.
I still think that the best way to read trolley problems is as failure conditions. I think of them as signs saying "the goal of social ethics is to avoid arriving at this kind of dilemma". They ask us to learn lessons from history, to draw on science and scholarship for insight, and to employ compassion and proactive thinking(!) in our decisionmaking at every scale, from the personal to the international and global.

Today I turn 88…I’ve seen some serious shit. The most serious of it all is love. I love my family, my friends, and my wonderful fans. The power of love remains.
The people who have made it their business to show women to us have forgotten that we already find women beautiful. In their diversity, in their authenticity, we find women beautiful. Without distorting their bodies with fillers and surgery, we find women beautiful.
Yes, the threats used to terrorize us into buying into the anti-human filth of Christianity are themselves anti-human filth.
When Christians tell you that having these threats fulfilled against you is what you deserve, that's just fresh anti-human filth. This filth has *layers*!

“Philosophy” and it’s just a bunch of academics who don’t care about wisdom at all writing papers for three other academics who don’t care about wisdom at all

At last the pendulum has swung back my way. Time to attack my enemies from what I'm sure will be a position of permanent advantage

Your annual reminder that we are under the thumb of attention economy that wants men and women to hate each other, and it’s ripping our world apart
I love this. If we must have the anti-human filth of Christianity in our midst, at least get wild with it!
I love this part where we like the cute funny actress before we make up reasons to hate her.
Dakota Johnson says she suffered a catastrophic full body shutdown on live camera, collapsing unconscious directly into Josh Hartnett’s arms after her internal organs completely mutinied mid scene.
" I fainted into Josh Hartnett's arms.
Turns out I had a kidney infection, but I just like passed out. We were in the middle of a scene and it's very serious."
"And he's like, 'Would you have come if you knew that Vanity was in a wheelchair?' And I just... and he kind of like caught me and laid me down on the ground."
"And then when I came to, I was like, 'Sorry guys, let's go again!' And they were like, 'Uh, you're going to the hospital.'"
