Bob Costas was 18 when his father dropped dead at JFK airport. At the wake, a man handed him a thick envelope with $6,000 in $100 bills. It was everything his father left behind, and a bookie would never have paid it to a dead man. In the video below, he tells the story himself. His father, John, was a big-time gambler. Not casinos, not racetracks. Ball games. Bob says the mortgage was literally riding on his bets. When the games went the wrong way, he threw things, cursed and yelled. Bobโ€™s mom and sister would leave. Bob stayed, because watching the games with his dad was the only way to be close to him. Friday, May 15, 1970. A cop knocks on the door. Before he says a word, Bobโ€™s mother asks, โ€œMy husbandโ€™s dead, isnโ€™t he?โ€ John Costas had a heart attack walking through JFK. He was 42. At the wake, one of his gambling buddies walked in with the envelope. โ€œYour father was up when he died. Give this to your mother.โ€ A bookie never pays a dead man, so the friend went to the bookie himself and said John sent him to collect. Decades later, Bob Costas refused to read sports betting ads on air. Today the bookie lives in everyoneโ€™s phone. Is that progress?

Update on my Babydoll. Man I hope this encourages someone in the battle today. Thank you isnโ€™t enough to all of you that have been praying for us. No greater gift you can give someone. Her oncologist called me Friday during our HS football game. He left a voicemail that said this, Um, the results came back stunning. Like, no tumor. I mean, it's, it's, we don't completely understand it. But give me a call and I'll explain what we think maybe going on and tell you how we resume. He doesnโ€™t understand, but we doโ€ฆ GOD and PRAYER!!!! Thank you for faithfully praying! WHAT A GOD!!โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Adam Schefter is a owner and investor of two sports betting apps. Within a span of hours he tweeted that Jalen Hurts wouldnโ€™t be put on injured reserve. Hours later the eagles put Hurts on IR. How is this not investigated?

I legitimately don't know one college football fan who is favor of this. This is college football's business people chasing some potential casual viewer in the sport's wastelands (like the Northeast) and the dollars they'll get selling the hope of that. Absolutely horrible.
Sources: The College Football Playoff is nearing a deal to expand to 24 teams, per sources. The new format will start in 2027 and is expected to come together in the near future, pending final approvals.

I think one of my biggest pet peeves in fantasy sports is when people donโ€™t treat a trade offer as the start of a conversation. Iโ€™ll never understand the logic of rejecting a trade and not proposing a counter or reaching out to the other manager to talk through options

โ€œOther Mommyโ€ and similar seasonal horror ads are also unwelcome during games. As a elementary school student, I had nightmares for weeks after seeing a commercial for An American Werewolf in London during The Dukes of Hazzard.
Dodgers player Alex Call is calling out MLB and broadcasters over the ads during postseason games. "Can we please get the soft porn ads off playoff broadcasts? My son wants to watch baseball with Dada, but how do I justify that when a half-naked woman could come on screen anytime?? This is Americaโ€™s Pastime. Parents shouldnโ€™t have to worry about this."

This is one contemporary journalists have gotten largely wrong, thanks to a biography written by Al Stump, a notoriously irresponsible scribe, and the movie Cobb that relied on it. For a more accurate depiction of a complicated man, read Charles Leerhsen's "Ty Cobb."
"Five years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, Ty Cobb publicly supported blacks and whites playing baseball together, adding: "Certainly it is okay for them to play. I see no reason in the world why we shouldn't compete with colored athletes as long as they conduct themselves with politeness and gentility. Let me say also, that no white man has the right to be less of a gentleman than a colored man; In my book that goes not only for baseball, but in all walks of life." Using even stronger language, Ty Cobb told the Sporting News in 1952 that: "The Negro should be accepted and not grudgingly, but wholeheartedly." In 1953, black newspapers cited his praise for Brooklyn Dodgers' catcher Roy Campanella, who Cobb said was: "Among the all-time best catchers in baseball." Following Roy Campanella's accident that left him paralyzed, the Dodgers staged a tribute game where tens of thousands of spectators silently held lit matches above their heads. Cobb wrote Walter O'Malley, the Dodgers owner to show his appreciation: "For what you did for this fine man." Cobb also stated that Willie Mays was the: "Only player I'd pay money to see." In the Ty Cobb obituaries that ran in the black press following Cobb's death, Cobb was praised for: "Speaking in favor of racial freedom in baseball."
