This is an excellent guide on what you can and should do to help if someone you know is taken by ICE.
The most important thing -
There's PLENTY we can do to make sure the person has the best chance of a fair outcome.
Keep in mind that MANY documented immigrants who are currently going through the legal process to stay in the US have been detained and deported.
At least on one US citizen was deported and the government was forced to bring him back.
We are not powerless.
If ICE Takes Someone You Know
A lot of people have asked me what they can actually do if someone they know is taken by ICE.
Here are the resources we found most useful, and the things I would do first.
1. Find them.
ICE has an online detainee locator. You can search using the person's A-number (immigration #) and country of birth, or their exact first and last name and country of birth.
locator.ice.gov
Note that someone may not appear immediately after being taken. The system also doesnโt contain everyone in ICE custody. If you can't find them, keep checking and contact the appropriate ICE field office.
ICE's Detention Reporting and Information Line is 1-888-351-4024.
2. Find a good immigration lawyer.
This is the most important thing you can do.
People taken by ICE have the right to an attorney, but unlike in a criminal case, the government generally doesnโt have to provide one.
The National Immigration Legal Services Directory lets you search for nonprofit organizations offering free or low-cost immigration legal help by state, county, ZIP code, or even detention facility.
immigrationadvocates.orโฆ
The ACLU also has a good overview of the rights of someone who has been detained.
3. Get their A-number.
This is the immigration identification number used to track a person's case.
Itโs generally nine digits. If an older A-number has only eight, government systems usually require a zero at the beginning.
This makes everything easier - finding someone, checking their immigration court case, and communicating with lawyers.
If you don't have it, ask the person's family or lawyer. It may also appear on previous immigration documents.
4. Find out what's happening with their case.
The Justice Department has an online system where you can enter an A-number and check basic immigration court information, including upcoming hearings and certain decisions.
You can also call the automated immigration court hotline at 1-800-898-7180.
Keep in mind: the online system doesnโt contain everything. It doesnโt include bond proceedings or motions. Official court notices are the best source.
5. Start gathering documents.
Friends and family can help collect information that may be useful to the lawyer: evidence of family ties, employment, a business, home ownership, community involvement, and letters from people who know the person. Our neighborhood wrote a lot of letters.
Give everything to the lawyer. Let the lawyer decide what matters for the particular case.
6. Ask the lawyer about bond or other possible release.
Don't assume that detention automatically means someone has to stay locked up while the case proceeds.
But don't assume bond is available either.
Whether youโre eligible depends on the person's situation, immigration history, and the legal authority under which they are being detained. This is one of the first questions to ask the lawyer.
If money may be needed, friends can start organizing so that it is available quickly. The bond for our gardener was not high - only $4,000.
7. Help the family.
This one sounds obvious but it matters.
Someone suddenly has to deal with lawyers, detention calls, court dates, childcare, lost income, bills, transportation, and the terror of not knowing whatโs going to happen.
Bring food. Drive someone somewhere. Help make calls. Set up a fundraiser if they need one. Take something off their plate.
8. Know what the detained person should do.
The ACLU's advice is simple if you are taken: stay silent, ask for a lawyer, and don't sign anything or make decisions about the immigration case without speaking with a lawyer.
And finally:
Don't assume thereโs nothing you can do.
That's what I would have assumed before this happened, but it isn't true.
There are phone calls to make. Lawyers to find. Documents to gather. Money to raise. Families to help.
Just start.
Thatโs what Betty did in our neighborhood.
Be a Betty.

.@jamestalarico: The problem with Ken Paxton is not that he didn't grow up in Texas. It's that he doesn't understand Texas. I believe anyone can be a Texan. It doesn't matter if you're an 8th generation Texan like me, or if you just got here. What makes a Texan is deep in the heart. Texas used to be known as the friendly state. Friendship is our official state motto. The word Texas comes from a Native American word for 'friend.' They used that word to describe a friend in a different tribe. Friendship across tribes. Friendship across divisions. That's what makes Texas so great.

My congressman does not lie.
We all watched it happen Dave.
Republicans came out with the Big Beautiful Bill. Democrats voted against it because it took millions from research and science . Millions of people would lose Medicaid because of those cuts, impacting the sick old and disabled. The cuts to Medicaid will cause rural hospitals to close. It also cut the ACA, leaving many with no affordable insurance options..
You know what it did do?
It gave tax cuts to the rich.๐
The Republicans refused to negotiate on anything. Did not show up to meetings.
So Mike Johnson sent them home and shut it down .
Never should you mislead people about the facts and
your opponentโs character
People are suffering because of that bill that you said was great, along with tariffs, DOGE cuts and the war, all things you have approved of.
I would never vote for someone who constantly attacks his opponent with misinformation.
That would be you, Dave.

This type of fearmongering about Israel is wrong. It is not a winning strategy for any state. It does nothing to help Michigan Democrats win up and down the ballot in eight days. Do we need to lower costs by building more homes, securing peopleโs health care, and creating a fairer federal tax code? Yes, we do!! How we do so is not by blaming the high costs of our goods on the only Jewish homeland in the world. I want to see Democrats succeed at every level, and that means keeping our focus on lowering costs for Michigan families and reining in this out-of-control President.
New @RebellionPac ad dropping in Michigan. We have to suffer here at home, so Israel can get all its wars. Thatโs why they buy politicians like Mike Rogers. He promised to serve Israel โunconditionally,โ but never made that promise to you.

Funny, you didn't have all this smoke for 'opportunity cost' donations when you were caping for a Nazi-tattooed rapist that sucked up massive amounts of money and disappeared it all without a trace, into the pockets of DC Consultants.
Hell no. This is already the most expensive race in Alaska history, Peltola raised $17 million in Q3. Your $25-$200 wonโt do shit.
Think of opportunity costs when there are so many local charities that could desperately use your money. Food banks are struggling to make up for $185m cut from SNAP last year.
If you insist on spending in politics, consider a state legislature race, whose entire budgets can be as low as $30k, or a municipal race. Your money actually matters at that level.

This candidate isn't running to win a Senate seat. He's running to deliberately fracture Jewish Democratic support in Michigan, and possibly nationwide. Please do not EVER support a Democratic candidate with this message EVER again, in primaries or general elections. For anything
Unless Abdul El-Sayed immediately demands that this campaign ad be taken down and unequivocally condemns it and its creators, he will be exposed as a vile, dangerous, and divisive antisemite. Any (of my fellow) Democrats who condemn the disgusting Ramaswamy ad in Ohio but do not condemn this deserve our unflinching contempt.

Our lives, our country and our democracy depend on us voting against every MAGA GOP minion on the ballot.
They are doing nothing for us and everything for the rich and powerful.
In two years, Trump has ruined our savings, our salaries, our jobs, the cost of living, our healthcare, even started a war with Iran and much more.

He's been hinting quite strongly about a 3rd term.
Even if he doesn't run again, what he's doing is not fair and in bad faith - just making more congressional districts in red states so Congress always has a GOP majority is not a free and fair election based on the will of the voters.

I didnโt have anything to do with producing this ad. Iโve not worked with Rebellion for years. I would have quit as executive director rather than produce this.
It is hurtful for people to think I would. I donโt know how I could possibly stand with Israel and Jews more than I do.
Iโm not Jewish, but one of the experiences Iโve shared with Jews is trying to reconcile people I dearly love and care about having horrific views on Israel. And I donโt have any answers.
I find this message as awful as you do.
