The Sting

Tom Skerritt was pure class; every time he stepped in front of a camera, he delivered. Once described as a “character actor locked in a leading man’s body,” he made it all look effortless. Rest easy, Viper.

Much like Gene Hackman, he could fill any role and make the movie sooooo much better.

Top Gun would not have been the Epic it turned out to be without the excellence provided by that scene.

Great clip. Man watching TG is such a time warp for me as I was in bootcamp when it came out. R.I.P. Tom Skerritt.

A great actor that definitely paid his dues on TV in the 1960s and 70s. He was even in five episodes of my favorite show Gunsmoke.

That description nails him. He never needed to be the loudest guy in the room. Top Gun is one of my all-time favourites, and Viper was the steady hand behind all the chaos. Rest easy, Viper.

His role in a River Runs Through It was very important to the movie Redford wanted to make - the Father was not the central role, but the axis upon which it turned. youtu.be/TfGmV-el44k?is=BFe6…

I just searched for this exact clip thirty minutes ago. Great minds think alike. This scene has lived rent-free in my mind since 1986.

Maverick You'll pick up your RIO when you get to the ship, and if you don't, give me a call. I'll fly with you. Classic line from a classic actor….

• Great, he's probably saying, 'Holy shit, it's Maverick and Goose.'" • Goose: "Yeah, I'm sure he's saying that."

One of my favorite roles of Tom Skerritt was Evan Drake in his 6 episode arc on Cheers, playing Kirstie Alley’s boss & her secret crush. Here he is with Woody Harrelson. | S06E10 | "No charge, Mr. Drake" youtu.be/bOWGz2z9LmA?is… via @YouTube

It doesn’t get much play anymore, but I really fell in love with Tom Skerritt in Steel Magnolias. Strong, sensitive, smart, warm, funny.
