Kanat üzerinde zımpara kâğıdı kadar pürüzlü bir buz tabakası bile kaldırma kuvvetini yüzde 30’a kadar azaltabilir. Mürettebat, daha sarsıntısız bir uçuş için yükselmek istedi. Ancak daha yüksek irtifa, daha seyrek hava ve daha da daralan bir güvenli hız aralığı demektir. Tek bir şiddetli sarsıntı yeterli olmuş olabilir: Kanat taşıma kaybına girer ve uçağın burnu aşağı düşer. Pilot telsizden uçağın hız sınırını aştığını ve dakikada 20 bin feet irtifa kaybettiğini bildirdi. Uçuş verileri ise bu kaybın yaklaşık 30 bin feet olduğunu gösteriyor. Bu, her saniye 40 katlı bir binanın yüksekliği kadar düşmek anlamına geliyor. Bunun için büyük bir arıza yaşanması gerekmemiş olabilir. Buzlanma, türbülans ve tırmanışın en kötü sırayla bir araya gelmesi yeterli olmuş olabilir.
