Critics of Lancastrian theonomy say that if we ever comply with a man-made law we have conceded the magistrate’s authority, and if we ever refuse we are in sin. Both claims confuse raw power with righteous authority—tactical compliance under duress is not moral compromise. futureofchristendom.org/refu…

The magistrate’s job is not to “create the conditions” in which fathers can do their work. That language is the open door to the nanny state.Scripture assigns the civil magistrate a narrow task: to be a terror to those who do evil and a praise to those who do good (Romans 13:3–4; 1 Peter 2:14). He is to establish justice by punishing actual crimes defined by God’s Law. He is not commissioned to order society so that fathers can more easily feed, clothe, educate, or protect their children. Peace, order, and the conditions that allow fathers to fulfill their responsibilities are the byproducts of justice, not the magistrate’s assigned task. When he punishes actual evil according to God’s standard, those good conditions follow. When he instead tries to engineer the conditions themselves, he steps outside his God-given role and begins to play father. Once you say the magistrate’s role is to create the right conditions for family life, you have given him a blank check. He can then claim authority over immigration, education, employment, housing, health, and nearly every other area of life under the banner of “protecting and ordering.”

Christian nationalists often argue that because a homeowner can keep people out of his house, the civil magistrate must be able to keep people out of the nation. The problem is that this logic does not stop at the front door. A father is also clearly allowed to feed, clothe, nurture, and educate his children. If the magistrate inherits every authority a father possesses simply because the father possesses it, then the magistrate should also be feeding, clothing, nurturing, and educating the citizenry. Most Christian nationalists rightly reject that second claim. They should reject the first one for the same reason. A father’s authority over his household does not transfer to the civil magistrate, whether the issue is immigration or the daily care of people. The magistrate’s duty is found not by looking at what a father does in the home, but by looking at what Scripture calls him to do: establish justice by punishing evildoers (those who break God’s Law), not “protect” or "order" the people. Protection and order are by-products of justice. (For more: tinyurl.com/spank-heinies)

Is modern Christian education teaching God’s law—or syncretizing Christianity with statism? Chris Hume takes a critical look at institutions like New Saint Andrews College and how they approach justice.

Join us October 15–17 in Ephrata for America Reforged. Luke Saint, president of Future of Christendom, will speak on “The American Dream.” The old dream was a good one: that our children would have it better than we did, and that we would hand them a land and a tradition worth keeping. Man-made law has made that harder with every generation. Luke will argue that the only way to leave our kin an America worth preserving is to turn back to the Law of God. Seats are limited. God hates injustice. He also hates the feast, the assembly, and the songs when justice is missing. The worship service is not the most important thing a Christian does. Justice is far weightier. Much of the church has it backwards. Join us October 15–17 at America Reforged in Lancaster County for @ChrisHume1658's session, 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘏𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱, and many more on law, justice, and biblical reformation.
