Colonel George Williams let his actions speak for him: a true hero — a silent hero.
He died at the Mull of Kintyre on 2 June 1994, aged 49. I dedicate this song, George Williams, to his memory.

Abimael Guzman, leader of the Shining Path terror group, was captured by Peruvian authorities in September 1992.
Guzman was a professor of philosophy when he took a leave of absence from academia to commit to full-time activism in the mid-1960s. He made numerous trips to China and was there during the Cultural Revolution in 1968. He returned to form the Communist Party of Peru which escalated from activism through the 1970s to violent attacks beginning in 1980.
The next twelve years were marked by severe violence as an estimated 70,000 people were killed as a result of Shining Path’s attempts to destabilize the government and create the conditions for a complete overthrow. Their strict enforcement of curfew hours and prohibitions against alcohol and drugs, plus brutal punishments for anyone ignoring their restrictions, slowly led to a loss of popular support.
In April 1983, a Shining Path commander was captured and killed in the town of Lucanamarca, which led them to murder 69 villagers in reprisal. The Lucanamarca massacre was a major turning point for how Shining Path was viewed by Peru as a whole.
Guzman was finally captured in September 1992 after members of the counterterrorist unit DIRCOTE raided the apartment he was using. In the years leading up to his capture, DIRCOTE received support from CIA, including from my former podcast guest Ric Prado.
The apartment had been one of several under surveillance as possible hideouts and eventually tubes of ointment for treating psoriasis were found in the trash outside. Guzman was known to suffer from psoriasis. The apartment’s tenant, Maritza Garrido Lecca, was a ballet instructor who taught in a dance studio on the first floor, and a fervent follower of Guzman.
Guzman was sentenced to life in prison and passed away in 2021. Maritza Lecca served 25 years in prison and was released in 2017.
After Guzman’s capture, Shining Path, which had numbered around 3,000 members total at its height, splintered and fell apart, although some activity continued into the 2020s.

The former special forces "A-Team" that was paid millions of dollars for targeted assassinations in Yemen.
Spear Operations Group was a Delaware based private military company founded by Hungarian-Israeli contractor Abraham Golan, staffed largely by former US special forces (including Navy SEALs and Green Berets).
They were hired by the United Arab Emirates in 2015 to run a targeted assassination program in Yemen amid the civil war, receiving roughly $1.5 million per month plus bonuses for successful killings.
The group’s first major operation was a December 2015 attempt on the life of Anssaf Ali Mayo, a Yemeni parliamentarian and Al-Islah party leader. The team planted explosives at Mayo’s office building, but he had been tipped off and fled minutes before the blast.
Members later claimed credit for other high-profile killings of political figures, clerics, and others the UAE viewed as opponents, while human rights groups have noted that many targets lacked clear terrorist ties.
Golan himself told BuzzFeed, “There was a targeted assassination program in Yemen. I was running it. We did it. It was sanctioned by the UAE."
In 2026, a US federal court lawsuit was filed by Mayo accusing Golan and former operators Isaac Gilmore and Dale Comstock of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and attempted extrajudicial killing.

An unidentified Union soldier from the Civil War was laid to rest at @ArlingtonNatl Cemetery.
Forensic analysis indicates the soldier was a Union infantryman estimated to be 16 to 19 years old, who died during the Second Battle of Manassas.
“Although the identity of this soldier is unknown, his sacrifice has not been forgotten.
His reinterment affirms our enduring obligation to ensure that every service member receives an honorable final resting place,” said Karen Durham-Aguilera @KDAEngineer, the executive director of Army National Military Cemeteries and the Office of Army Cemeteries.
