And the funding was already frustrating; it's largely paid for out of the More MARTA tax, which is supposed to *expand* transit, not redesign plazas. Now there's extra disappointment. CEO Jonathan Hunt reports that the work will take longer than expected & cost more.

AJC: "The contractor’s timeline now calls for the project to finish two years later than expected, in 2031....Hunt told council members to also expect “a large budget jump...the project could end up costing “somewhere more like $330″ million"

“I am a blunt person and I don’t know what else to say. This sucks,” said Shayna Pollock, a [MARTA] board member representing DeKalb County. “It stinks to say that we don’t know how much money this is going to be.”"

The costly renovation of the top of Five Points MARTA Station was already disappointing thanks to its uninspiring goals: simply replacing the canopy with a new one & redesigning the plaza & bus bay.
No new active uses (like stores or homes) are being added on the property.

This is a bad move by Bottoms. Expanding casino gambling shouldn’t be thought of as an economic development tool. It will only worsen the gambling addiction many folks have already. Online betting+ casino expansion= folk hooked on gambling like crack in the 80’s.
Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms is going further than simply supporting a statewide vote on casino gambling, casting legalization as an economic development tool for struggling communities. #gapol

Take a deep dive into Buttermillk Bottoms through this incredible digital project from Atlanta artist Joel Silverman. This is the African American neighborhood that was razed and replaced with the Atlanta Civic Center.

The area around Midtown MARTA Station in 2026 & 2005. In that same period, our only rail expansion was a pitiful streetcar loop 1.3 miles long.
Infill density moves faster than transit construction. While we wait for new rail, densifying near existing stops is important.

Related, from the Land Use Labs account on LinkedIn:
"The City of Atlanta has spent the last few years discussing zoning code reform - and we're pleased to announce that they've brought on Land Use Labs to get those reforms over the finish line..."

This could be good news for Atlanta's future urbanism -- the years-long effort to revise the city's zoning is being paused until 2027 because of red flags about the zoning rewrite not going far enough to allow new density in neighborhoods.

"What's worse, the code has a higher portion of land allowing *only single-family housing by right than any peer city except Richmond, bans ADUs on a higher portion of land than any peer city except New Orleans, and has insufficient land devoted to multi-family housing."

These concerns form Bronin echo warnings we've seen for months from local developer Eric Kronberg about the draft zoning rewrite being too weak in terms of its allowance for new, urban-appropriate housing types and densities. – at Atlanta, GA
The Atlanta Comprehensive Transportation Plan will guide transportation investments and improvements across the city over the next 15 years.
Let the city know that you want a future where wallking/biking/transit are more highly valued as transportation!
