I'm not self-hosting to save money. (I am saving a ton of money, but it's not really my main motivation.) I do it to stay in control, stay independent from big tech, and save time. It's literally faster to have my AI deploy a self-hosted template than to click around Vercel or AWS. Tech has gaslit you into thinking you need expensive cloud to "ship fast". It's all BS. Mathematicians are coping so hard. Suddenly they can not stand AI. 😀 the guild is so badly protecting its turf. The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM), criticised OpenAI's yesterday's release of 722 math manuscripts and urged mathematicians "to discontinue their work with OpenAI". And then Terence Tao's reposted AHM's statement on his blog. Walking away is not a scientific position.
