Basque is considered a language isolate, meaning it has no known linguistic relatives anywhere in the world. It is the only language in Europe with this unique classification.
Basque is the only widely recognized language isolate in Europe, spoken by communities in the Basque Country of northern Spain and southwestern France.
Many linguists consider it the last surviving pre-Indo-European language of Western Europe, preserving a linguistic tradition that predates the arrival of Celtic languages and the later expansion of Latin across the continent. Despite centuries of study, no proposed connection between Basque and any other language family has gained broad acceptance among scholars.
Today, around 750,000 people speak Basque, and the language has undergone a significant revival through education, media, and official recognition after facing centuries of decline.

The Brian Unwin Library houses a special piece of CQHS history.
As our founding headteacher, Brian Unwin helped shape this school from day one.
Thanks to his love of reading and his family’s book donation, students can connect with that very legacy every time they open a book.
