The smartest thing a traveler can do in Japan is use the neighborhood 7-Eleven as a personal post office and storage locker.
My friend Dave from Texas, whom his coworkers call Porch-Camera Dave because he has three security cameras aimed at his front steps in Houston, visited Tokyo with his wife last month.
On his third afternoon in Shibuya, Porch-Camera Dave bought two cast-iron kitchen knives and a box of ceramic tea cups, then stopped on the sidewalk looking exhausted.
"I have to carry these back to the hotel before we go to dinner, and my feet are already cooked," Porch-Camera Dave said.
"Why do you not drop them at that 7-Eleven across the street and have them waiting at your next hotel in Kyoto?" I asked.
A delivery driver in a green-and-yellow Yamato Transport cap, a cheerful veteran the store staff called Captain Kenji, was wheeling a dolly through the sliding doors right beside us.
"Wait, a convenience store ships boxes between hotels?" Porch-Camera Dave asked.
"Twenty-four hours a day," I said, leading him inside past the hot food counter.
Behind the register, a college student clerk named Yuki pulled a cardboard shipping box from under the counter and handed us a digital tablet.
"And what if I order something online while I am traveling?" Porch-Camera Dave asked. "Who watches the package on the porch?"
"Look to your left," I said, pointing at a tall steel cabinet painted blue and white next to the ATM.
"Is that an Amazon locker?" Porch-Camera Dave asked.
"That is a PUDO station," Captain Kenji said in practiced English, tapping the steel door.
"Any resident or traveler can route any delivery to any convenience store or train station locker in Japan for free."
"So nobody leaves boxes sitting out in the rain?" Porch-Camera Dave asked.
"Even if they do, nobody takes them," Yuki said with a polite bow.
"Last week a man accidentally left a new camera lens on top of the locker, and it stayed there for two days until he came back."
"Two days?" Porch-Camera Dave said, staring at the locker as if it were an alien spacecraft.
"In Houston, a guy in a hoodie would have listed that lens on Facebook Marketplace before the automatic doors finished closing."
We paid fourteen dollars at the register to ship Dave's heavy box to Kyoto.
Porch-Camera Dave walked out holding a one-dollar iced coffee with both hands completely free, and told his wife he was moving his mailing address to Aisle One of a Tokyo 7-Eleven.

My cousin's son, Haru, learned about America from a Japanese textbook.
Then he lived there for a year.
Three years ago, my cousin's job sent his family to a small town in Oklahoma. Haru was 11. When he came home, his teacher asked him to give a presentation. He made a chart. Two columns.
TEXTBOOK: Americans are individualistic.
HARU: When my mom broke her ankle, a church we had never been to brought us dinner for three weeks. In January, someone left firewood on our porch every week. We never found out who.
TEXTBOOK: Americans are loud.
HARU: True. But when a boy on the other team got hurt at a football game, 4,000 people went silent. When he stood up, both sides clapped. Even the people who had been yelling at him.
TEXTBOOK: Americans are always busy.
HARU: Our neighbor, Mr. Pruitt, 74, spent three Saturdays teaching me to fish. He didn't catch anything either. He said that wasn't the point.
TEXTBOOK: Americans don't respect elders.
HARU: Every Sunday, four teenagers carried Mrs. Pearl's chair to the front row at church. She is 96. They argued about whose turn it was.
TEXTBOOK: Americans don't know much about other countries.
HARU: True. A girl in my class asked if Japan has Christmas. But on my birthday, she gave me a card with my name in Japanese. She learned it from YouTube. It was backwards. I still have it.
TEXTBOOK: Americans move a lot and don't stay connected.
HARU: It has been three years. Every year on my birthday, Mr. Pruitt calls. He doesn't say much. He asks if I've caught anything yet.
I haven't.
His teacher asked Haru what grade he would give the textbook.
"It's not wrong," he said. "It just never met anybody."

🧂 Deep Inside An Iranian Salt Mine, A Man From 1,700 Years Ago Was Found Almost Perfectly Preserved In the Chehrabad Salt Mine, miners uncovered the naturally mummified remains of a man dating back to the ancient Sasanian period.
Known today as the “Salt Man of Iran,” the individual was preserved not by burial rituals, but by the mine’s extreme salt conditions, which removed moisture and slowed decomposition for nearly 1,700 years. When discovered, the man still had visible hair, a beard, facial features, and even a gold earring.
Researchers also found knives, textiles, and personal items beside the body, offering a rare glimpse into daily life in ancient Persia. Archaeologists later uncovered additional preserved individuals at the site, collectively known as the Salt Men of Iran — one of the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries ever found in a mining environment.

"Hi, I'm a Pakistani Muslim who was lifted into a high position...
..let me tell you how you're a racist for not liking us just because millions of us have poured into your country, raping and pillaging on an industrial scale"
This Islamophobia Awareness Month, we must shine a light on the abhorrent hatred and discrimination Muslims continue to face.
In the last year alone, religious hate crimes targeting Muslims rose by 15% in England and Wales.
This is utterly unacceptable. London will always stand against hatred, prejudice and discrimination.

What's the difference between a totalitarian state and this Labour government ?
.......
Sorry, I've forgotten the punchline
This is not protest: it is an attack on academic freedom. A lecture theatre exists so that a lecturer can teach a subject and students can learn. It is not a political tribunal, a purity test, or a venue for ideological confrontation. Disrupting lectures like this harms every student who showed up to study the philosophy of religion, not to hear puerile activist monologues. James Orr's reply was straightforward: his business there is to teach, not to engage in political arguments. Solidarity with that, which is the correct boundary. Political disagreements belong in debate societies, open letters, publications, or public meetings; not in the hijacking of a lecture. Universities remain worth defending only if they protect the right of scholars to teach without mob interruption, even (and especially) when their external views are unpopular or contested. Turning lectures into activist confrontations is how serious inquiry dies. I hope the University and the Faculty robustly defend their lecturer’s right to teach. Students who disagree with his politics are free to argue the case elsewhere; they are not and should not be free to impede others' learning and shut down the class.

We have a serious education issue in America and if we don’t address it, we have a horrible future ahead of us
These kind of responses are to be expected because 12th grade reading results in 2024 in America showed that reading levels right now the lowest they’ve ever been since the assessment began in 1992
