There is a reason Lagos is the center of excellence. I was on a panel yesterday and it’s amazing how many new areas of medicine are still untapped in this our Nigeria. Big shoutout to my brother @DeboOdulana and his team. Looking forward to the coming exciting days.

Celebrating our brave anesthesists who go to war with us even with patients as high as 190/200kg! Background heroes who do not get even half the praises bestowed on those proud surgeons. Happy World Anesthesia Day

So lucky my love for video games (almost ruined my life btw) led me into laparoscopic surgery. Still staring at screens but now, it’s for bigger more impactful stuff 😁
all roads lead back to the hobbies you had as a child

I hope this isn’t true. Who advised him for a liposuction when what he obviously needed was weight loss intervention
Just In: Ijaw traditional ruler, HRH Moses Theophilus, 64, of the Akassa Kingdom in Brass LGA, Bayelsa State, has died following a reported botched liposuction surgery.

Yeah, it has gotten to the stage where we now write letters to primary and secondary schools to stop giving our patients junk food and soda and place them on diet recommended by our bariatric dietitian.

The basic truth is that weight loss procedures are not affordable to the ‘common’ man in Nigeria. Interestingly, unlike in the western world, obesity in Nigeria is commoner among the wealthy and well educated so the higher incidence of obesity is among those who can afford care.

We wrote about the prices of some of the commonly done procedures in various centers in the country. I believe the single most important strategy to make these life changing procedures available to the underserved is including bariatric care in insurance packages.

Some procedures i am very certain you don’t need to travel abroad for. Nigerian surgeons have so much proficiency, their outcomes can match or even outperform those of our contemporaries abroad 1. Fibroid surgery 2. Liposuction/BBL 3. Thyroid surgery 4. Knee replacement 5. IVF

We need to take childhood obesity serious. Hopefully sometime next year we also get to publish our case series of children with obesity that we have had to intervene. We should not normalize having 12year olds weighting 140kg please!

Bare chested gym instructor, no medical training whatsoever, making videos comparing Retratrutide and Tirzapatide explains everything about the abuse of weight loss injections in Nigeria.

Btw, this same fellow is selling Reta to unsuspecting Nigerians. A drug that has not gotten approval for human use by any drug agency in the world. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Not long ago, I operated a child weighing over 150kg. Before that was a 164kg child. It really hurts me to see children limited by their own weight, some even battling adult problems like hypertension, knee pains etc. Children with obesity don’t get to enjoy childhood at all.

Adults with obesity increase the burden on our already frail healthcare system. Obesity reduces their overall quality of life and even lifespan. It affects fertility in woman, musculoskeletal system, can increase risk of Neuro, renal and cardiovascular disease.

This is why everyone should be passionate about childhood obesity and fight it with everything. Our generation can help the next one have a better start at life. Literally.

Saw a colleague start a business that I thought was absolutely ridiculous and I remember everyone called me crazy too when I left a very busy general surgery practice at one of the biggest hospitals in Abuja to go full time private practice in bariatrics.

Watching a BMI 52, diabetic hypertensive with knee arthritis and sleep apnea refuse weight loss surgery and head to the plastic surgeon for a tummy tuck and 360lipo. 🤦🏾‍♂️

For those who don’t understand, Weight loss surgery can help resolve chronic problems such as hypertension, diabetes and sleep apnea. Tummy tuck/liposuction are not weight loss surgeries and don’t help with metabolic issues. Many Nigerian patients don’t know the difference.

…plus the marketing of plastic surgeons and plastic surgery clinics in Nigeria is really on another level. Some Nigerian plastic surgery clinics can compete with any of their peers anywhere in the world. Bariatric clinics have a lot of work to do.
