The 27% drop in millet production is what worries me most. Millet tolerates drought, marginal soils, and heat - precisely the conditions climate change is amplifying across the Sahel. We are subsidizing farmers into fragility.

Across Africa, many agricultural development actors are promoting large-scale monocultures. Sadly, this has worsened food insecurity by narrowing on-farm crop diversity & undermining the cultivation of locally adapted varieties. Read More: aljazeera.com/opinions/2026/… #Agroecology

Africa’s Green Revolution: Failure to Launch - @AGRA_Africa's much-anticipated 20th anniversary report wasn't released until three days after its own launch event. A fitting metaphor for a program that has failed to spur a productivity revolution. tawise01.medium.com/africas-…

Thank you for speaking truth to power! Fertiliser use doubled, hunger up 58% across AGRA's thirteen countries. Senegal halved hunger through diversified farming. Time to fund what works: #agroecology in the next CAADP strategy!

In those nice photos of @AGRA_Africa leaders holding their #AGRAat20 report, none is holding the actual report, just the executive summary. Why? Because two days later the report still is not available. How can we check the specious claim of doubling farmer incomes?
This morning in Nairobi, we opened an important conversation about the next chapter of Africa’s agrifood systems. As part of #AGRAat20, we launched our Impact, Learning & Foresight Report, bringing together members of the media to unpack what two decades of evidence tell us about Africa’s progress, and what needs to change. Over the past 20 years, together with our partners, we have helped strengthen critical capacities across the continent: supporting over 100 seed companies, more than 650 improved seed varieties, over 25,000 agro-dealers and 33,000 Village Based Advisors, while five million farmers have been trained in soil health and climate-smart practices. These are contributions to a much bigger African transformation, built alongside governments, farmers, researchers, businesses, financiers and development partners. But the report is equally clear: progress has been real, but it has not yet added up to the transformation Africa needs. The next chapter must ensure that gains in productivity translate into income, resilience, dignity and opportunity for farmers. The next 20 years must turn progress into prosperity. Hours after this announcement, we await the report you are urging us to read. The press release is wildly misleading, stating that "farmers' incomes have doubled." They have not. Total farm revenue may have. Please correct the record. #AGRAat20
Today in Nairobi, we are celebrating 20 years of AGRA; two decades of working alongside Africa’s farmers, governments, researchers, businesses, financiers and development partners to advance the continent’s agricultural transformation. But #AGRAat20 is also a moment to look critically at the journey: what has worked, what has not, what we have learned, and what Africa’s food systems will demand of us next. That reflection is grounded in AGRA’s Impact, Learning & Foresight Report, drawing on evidence and learning from the past two decades to help shape an actionable agenda for the future. The evidence points to important progress, but also an unfinished transformation. The challenge ahead is ensuring that gains in productivity translate into income, resilience, dignity and opportunity for smallholder farmers. As we celebrate how far we have come together today, our eyes are firmly on what comes next. #AGRAat20 #AGRA #AGRAImpact #AGRAForesightReport

Very misleading data on one year, maybe just good rains. From 2018-2024 AGRA countries saw maize yields grow just 9%, a broader basket of food crops just 2%. bpb-us-e1.wpmucdn.com/sites.…
For millions of smallholder farmers, productivity remains closely connected to food security, income and resilience. In 2025, average yields of priority crops among farmers reached through AGRA, supported interventions increased by 25%. Behind productivity are interconnected systems: access to appropriate seed and inputs, knowledge and extension, functioning markets and an enabling policy environment. Strengthening these systems remains critical to ensuring productivity gains can contribute to more resilient farms and stronger livelihoods.

"Malawi illustrates the paradox at the centre of the report: it recorded the strongest yield growth of any country studied, and hunger still climbed there by 61%." "25 years ago, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa launched with a promise: commercial seed, synthetic fertiliser and better market access would lift yields, raise incomes and cut hunger across the continent" "count of chronically undernourished people across those countries has risen 58% since 2006"
