An Instagram photo sparked a two-year search through Colombia's rainforest, leading researchers to identify a new species of giant water lily. Only 30 to 50 plants are estimated to exist in the wild, and researchers are assessing its conservation status.

In November 1941 the richest man in America drove his twenty-three-year-old daughter to a hospital in Washington without telling her mother, had two surgeons drill holes in her skull and cut into the front of her brain while she sang God Bless America to them, and when the singing stopped she had a mental age of two and the family did not speak her name for twenty years. Rosemary Kennedy was the third child and the first girl, and she was slow. A nurse at the birth had held Rose Kennedy's legs together for two hours while they waited for the doctor, and the baby had been starved of air. She learned to read and write, but late, and in a family where the boys were being bred for the presidency and the girls for the right marriage, she was the one who could not keep up, the one who had to be coached and watched and given the simpler part in the photograph. She was also, by every account, the prettiest of them, and when the family went to London in 1938 she was presented at court in a white dress and curtsied to the King without a mistake. Then she was twenty-one, and the trouble started. Moods. Rages. Slipping out of the convent school at night and coming back in the morning and not saying where. The nuns said she might be meeting men. For Joseph Kennedy, who was managing his sons towards the White House and could not have a daughter who might get pregnant or get talked about, that was the end of it. He had read about a new operation. Walter Freeman had promised the newspapers it calmed the agitated, and Joe Kennedy had never in his life been told that a thing he could pay for would not work. Rosemary was given a mild sedative and kept awake. Freeman and his surgeon, James Watts, opened the skull on both sides and Watts pushed a blade into the frontal lobes and swept, while Freeman asked her to recite the Lord's Prayer and sing, and count backwards, so they would know how far to go. They went until she was incoherent. Then they stopped. She came out of it unable to walk or speak. Years of therapy got her a few words and a limp. Joe moved her to a private hospital in New York and then to a convent school in Wisconsin, told the family she was teaching the retarded in the Midwest, and never went to see her. Rose, her mother, was not told what had been done until long after, and did not visit for twenty years. The brothers and sisters, including the one who became President, were told she was away. When Joe had his stroke in 1961 and could no longer manage the story, Eunice went to Wisconsin and found a woman of forty-three who did not know her, and came home and started the Special Olympics. Rosemary lived to eighty-six, in the convent, and died in 2005 with her surviving sisters at the bed. The brother who became President had signed the first federal mental health law in 1963, and the family has said she was the reason. Freeman kept operating for another twenty-six years. His notes on Rosemary have never been released. That is what the expert's confidence looks like when it meets a powerful man with an inconvenient child. The science was published. The father was certain. The daughter sang to the surgeon until she could not. Every institution that has ever decided it knows what is wrong with you and how to tidy it has the same two ingredients in the room, and the person on the table is still the only one who pays.

Ohio, let's do what we can to elect @AmyActonOH as your next Governor and @SherrodBrown as your next U.S. Senator! They’ve dedicated their lives to fighting on behalf of all Ohioans. If we’re willing to organize and mobilize, if we’re willing to turn out in big numbers in Ohio and across this country, if we’re willing to vote for change and vote for Democrats up and down the ballot, then this election might just mark the moment this country began moving in a better direction. So make a plan to vote today at IWillVote.com/OH.

“We don’t ride bicycles in Iowa,” Joe Mitchell said to President Trump during a GOP campaign rally. Iowa’s roughly 900,000 cyclists, many of whom have participated in an annual cycling tour that’s made the state synonymous with biking, weren’t amused. wapo.st/4ilkArV

Carol Greider achieved success in molecular biology in the same way she overcame dyslexia as a child: with persistence and creativity. Greider is one of many Nobel Prize laureates that have dyslexia.

🚨HEARTBREAKING: 91-year-old Helen and her 88-year-old husband George had been married for 65 years. George relied on 12 pills a day for severe heart failure. When their supplemental insurance lapsed, Helen faced a $940 bill for his monthly prescriptions instead of the usual $50 co-pay. Terrified as she watched his health decline, she took the medicine from the pharmacy without paying. She was arrested for felony theft and brought to court directly from the hospital in a gown and chains. Judge Marcus, visibly moved, ordered the chains removed, dismissed the charges, and arranged immediate assistance for the couple, including medicine and emergency aid. SHARE @the17th_letter6

The Catholic Church teaches that the death penalty is "inadmissible," primarily because every human being has God-given dignity, even a murderer, even a mass murderer. The televising of an execution is barbarism of the worst kind, offering up death as entertainment. Some Catholics still reject Pope Francis's magisterial pronouncement on the death penalty, which is now included in the Catechism. But opposition to the death penalty, grounded in the respect for all human life, is not a brand new doctrine. Rather, it is one that took time to develop, as the church came to understand more deeply the innate dignity of every human life. "The new evangelization calls for followers of Christ who are unconditionally pro-life: who will proclaim, celebrate and serve the Gospel of life in every situation. A sign of hope is the increasing recognition that the dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil. . . . I renew the appeal I made . . . for a consensus to end the death penalty, which is both cruel and unnecessary." —St. John Paul II, St. Louis, Missouri, January 27, 1999

🚨A 24 YEAR OLD STOCK TRADER. NEVER A FIREFIGHTER. 🕊️ Welles Crowther worked on the 104th floor of the South Tower as an equities trader. He always carried a red bandana, a habit from childhood, given to him by his father. On 9/11, instead of evacuating, he went back in. Three separate times. Guiding survivors through smoke and debris with nothing but a calm voice and that same red bandana tied over his face. Survivors didn't know his name at first. They just remembered "the man in the red bandana." He's credited with saving as many as 18 lives before the tower collapsed with him still inside. He was 24. 💔 25 years later. Never forget. 🇺🇸🙏
