One of the cruelest things about Autistic/ADHD masking is that you learn to treat positive emotions as a warning sign that you're about to do something "wrong" and that it is therefore "safest for everyone" if you maintain a constant, low-key negative internal emotional state.

"What trans people are going through in this country is hell.” If you do one thing tonight, watch @OwenJones84's incredibly powerful speech at the #PinkNewsAwards 🏳️‍⚧️ "Don’t let them divide us, don’t let them divide the LGBTQ movement in this country" #TransRightsAreHumanRights

I appreciate the need for plain language, but can we also acknowledge that plain language is actually harder for some folks to produce and comprehend? Sometimes I get knocked on my vocabulary in disability spaces. I get called elitist and pretentious. UM, IT'S NEURODIVERGENCE.

Fun fact - recess and lunch, supposed ‘break’ times at school, were actually incredibly tiring to me because they were just full on sensory overload, and I always performed the worst in classes directly after them

Framing mental health problems as chronic illnesses that have flare-ups (as all chronic illnesses do) would save so many patients from self-criticism over lapses. The idea/goal of 'full recovery' is still common in treatment settings, and it puts so much undue pressure on people.

This is a really impressive paper! It studies natural peer interactions among autistic and non-autistic adolescents over a 5 month period. Within-neurotype interactions grew over time and were more relational and included more sharing of experiences than cross-neurotype ones.

yep most of society is mandatory conversion therapy
I'm realizing that most non-autistic people, especially when thinking about social norms that they're used to in society, think that a lot of autistic people have a choice to be the "right way" when actually we just have a disability. 🤷🏻

To me it parallels telling a trans person to just.. be less trans/not talk about it? Or pretend like they're not? As if it's something someone's choosing to be instead of something someone is. Autism isn't some moveable thing in the brain, it's who I am, like anything else
