I am speechless. Thomas Aquinas College just dropped a study on the rigor of the new SAT. It compares the 1980/87 test with 2026. The findings should terrify every parent and teacher... Vocabulary has collapsed. Old SAT: 70.6% of questions tested vocab. New SAT: 15%. The old test forced students to know a wide range of words through analogies, antonyms, and sentence completions. The new test abandoned that. Most vocab questions now just ask students to fill in one blank from context. Reading passages also got radically shorter (average ~97 words vs 300–340). The new test uses short expository passages and hands you the necessary background knowledge inside the text. The older tests leaned much more heavily on argumentative and persuasive writing, assumed far more historical, scientific, and cultural knowledge, and penalized students who lacked it. This is a redefinition of what "college readiness" means. If you believe that kids should develop rigorous vocabulary, be capable of sustained reading, and possess background knowledge, I have bad news for you. The SAT no longer measures these. If you want a future where children can actually read difficult texts and construct complex arguments, the SAT must be replaced now. This cannot go on.
We were concerned that the SAT has become a less reliable measure of student preparedness for a rigorous college curriculum. So, we commissioned a study from Johns Hopkins University. What does this study tell us about the state of higher education? The results are shocking. thaq.co/4iLThZ0

Happy Birthday Caravaggio! Born in 1571 on the Feast of the Archangels, he was named for Michael & perhaps took the sword part too seriously. I am happy to anounce OTD that I am on my final chapter of my book about this great artist for @WordOnFire- to be released in 2027!

Be so committed to the vision that failure is instantaneously reframed as progress, and that success is internalized as inevitable And be so radically faithful that regardless of the timeline or outcome, you fully trust and endlessly praise the Lord

Fr. Ripperger: “Demons have a principle: ‘Anything but God. ANYTHING but God.’ If they can get you totally hung up about some particular issue [state of the world, the Church, etc.] & get you focused on that, they know they’ve got you derailed because you’re NOT focusing on God.”

Christ says the eye is the lamp of the body. The saints understood this not merely as physical sight, but as the direction of the soul What you continually look upon gradually shapes who you become. The greedy man sees self-gain everywhere. The fearful man sees threats. The lustful eye sees objects. The envious see what they lack. While the pure of heart learn to see God in everything, in everyone, everywhere. Pay attention to what occupies your gaze. Your attention reveals your treasure, and what you treasure reveals your heart.

The beautiful thing about life is that it does get better, and God often likes to surprise you. The timeline's largely hidden – one day after the next til suddenly you're experiencing joys you never imagined, and all the sorrows in between are redeemed

It is incredibly reckless to have primary care physicians prescribing SSRI’s. 10 minute meeting and a prescription pad. No informed consent. No consult with providers. Following a protocol provided for them. Assembly line medicine. Tragedies could be prevented w/ common sense
