logician, adj. (pejorative) I do math that mathematicians think is philosophy ... and I do philosophy that philosophers think is math ...

A thread that is probably misguided. Let's call it: An ordinary language response to a structuralist problem in philosophy of mathematics. It's not very catchy.

Analytic philosophy was destroyed by Godel in the '30's, by using the same Platonic arguments - proof is not truth, truth is an intuition you can't prove true. The analytics confuse proof with truth. That's why this is not philosophy, but a tool in computer science.

you know I'm starting to think that some people care more about the fact that the math problems are being solved by ai than about the problems themselves

This is pretty gross tbh. Seems to have scraped every problem anyone's ever said they're working on in places like Oberwolfach reports, and set them as targets for prompters with no interest in mathematical understanding.
UnsolvedMath - a collection of open math problems for LLMs to solve - just got an update to v1.8 bringing total number of problems to 17,614. In particular we've added all Erdos problems (also solved ones), Kourovka Notebook and did a another clean up. What does a superhuman level of mathematics look like? Here is one elementary example I could give to nonexperts. Daniel Kane and Terence Tao showed (arxiv.org/abs/1702.00912) that, given a collection X of sets, the total number of ways to write A as a disjoint union of B and C, with A, B, C from X (disjoint means non-overlapping), is at most cardinality of X to the power 1.72598…, and this power is sharp. To show this, they came up with an innocent-looking function B(x,y,z) = (xyz)^c of three variables, satisfying a certain arithmetic inequality and having prescribed boundary conditions. Proving that arithmetic inequality was really a headache. There was a question whether one could improve this bound, i.e., maybe add some logarithmic correction terms, and one could kind of imagine what should be done (see comments on terrytao.wordpress.com/2017/…), but it was not clear whether it would be easy to do. Now superintelligence improves this bound by introducing a certain monster function of three variables (see screenshot). Even if I had seen this function in my dreams, I would never have dared to verify that main arithmetic inequality. The candidate function produced by SI gives a bound matching the known lower-bound examples up to a constant factor, including the sharp logarithmic correction. All the details are here paatai.github.io/ai-proofs/b…

A mutual slid into my DMs and asked: “Why do algebraic geometers love telling people they're algebraic geometers?” Well I don't know about others but after everything I've been through, you think I'd just introduce myself as “someone who does math”?! No way!! If I wanted humility, I'd study category theory

A counterexample to Vaught’s conjecture for infinitary logic has been verified in Lean! In joint work with Nate Ackerman and Robin Knight, we developed and formalized a construction based on Knight’s unpublished manuscript.

Mathematical logic will be less threatened by AI than other fields of mathematics. Other mathematicians have already eliminated most of the jobs for logicians.

So many people who don't really math with lots of strong views on how math should be done ... ... fwiw i like the discovery angle but a few short months ago people had a bunch of different angles on math and it still all held together ... now it's a bit of a mess
The purpose of the field of mathematics should be discovery, not protection of the careers of its practitioners. If AI can immediately solve problems with which humans have long struggled, this is a good thing.

I don't get it. The Machine God's super intelligence is infallible, and It does not make mistakes. To withdraw or revise Its holy proclamations is blasphemy of the highest order. Heretics! Heretics all!
We've updated our GitHub math repo with 6 new Lean formalizations, 19 modifications, and 3 withdrawals. The repo now has ~42% top-line results formalized. We will continue to update the repo with new formalizations and with any errata we notice. github.com/openai/math/blob/…

arxiv.org/abs/2610.06802 See kids, this is how you can add great value without proving new theorems. The only other place where I've seen this written out explicitly is Chapter VII of Basic Set Theory by Azriel Levy.

I should concede that OpenAI has just given me a free researcher account. At least for me, this seems like a step in the right direction.
I use their tools because at least for now I kinda have to. But I think these companies are pretty awful. And they're also full of shit. They aren't trying to help mathematics, learning, whatever. They're tying to sell their product.

PSA. This tweet was merely intended to highlight the ironic position of a philosophy professor working for an AI company. I offer no views about the correct interpretation of Harvey's work.
This is you right? xitter.cf/LedermanHarvey/status/… You're making bank w anthropic right? Maybe you should be taking some of this on the chin and having a bit of a reflect.
