64 years since the Cuban Missile Crisis Vladimir Putin: “What don’t you understand? Are we putting missiles near the borders of the US? No. It’s the US with their missiles coming to our home. They’re literally on our doorstep. Is this really too much to ask? No more strike systems on our doorstep.” When the shoe was on the other foot, the US took the world to the brink of nuclear Armageddon. In the 21st Century, the US and NATO expect Russia to accept the very conditions that were so unacceptable that the US almost began a nuclear war.
On this day in 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis began after President JFK announced a blockade on Cuba🇨🇺, following the discovery of Soviet missile sites in the country. The Soviet Union’s positioning of missiles was a direct response to US nuclear weapons being placed in Turkey and Italy, aimed at the USSR… And the US’ failed CIA Bay of Pigs invasion, which was an embarrassing attempt at removing Fidel Castro from power. For 13 days, the Soviet Union and the United States stood at the brink of nuclear Armageddon. Tense negotiations between General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev and President John F. Kennedy averted disaster, with the Soviet Union agreeing to remove its missiles from Cuba, while the US pledged to not invade Cuba and promised to remove its nuclear weapons from Turkey. Arguably, the situation today is far worse than the Cuban Missile Crisis, and is a result of Washington’s and NATO’s hypocrisy. The US took the world to the brink of nuclear war in 1962 over Soviet nuclear weapons being placed in Cuba…over the 21st Century, US and NATO nation troops and strike systems, sit on Russia’s borders. US nuclear weapons are stationed in Europe, aimed at Russia. Not once have NATO leaders acknowledged that if the shoe were on the other foot, with Russia or China attempting to build a military presence in Mexico or Canada, the US would react with a ferocious military attack. NATO weaponry is being fired deep into Russia via Washington’s proxy, Zelensky, a scenario that would have been unthinkable even at the height of the so-called Cold War. One strike causing a mass casualty event could start a NATO-Russia direct conflict.

If NATO's eastward expansion was allegedly not so bad, then Russia's westward expansion can't be so bad either?

If it keeps going at this rate, we might, for (I think) the first time in history, be about to witness the first continent-wide youth revolt in Europe - a "European spring" of sorts. The sheer number of countries where it's **already** happening is pretty overwhelming. I count 8, including 4 with violent clashes: - France, famously - Albania (see below) with daily clashes in Tirana and a government building set alight - Belgium: the French movement spilled over, including riots in Liège - Italy: "No Meloni Day" student protests since 16 October, turning into riots in Milan, Turin and Bologna - Greece: students camping in Athens' Syntagma Square over housing and education costs, explicitly inspired by France - Germany: pupils blockading schools in Berlin and Hamburg in solidarity with France - Spain: an indefinite education strike in Madrid, with students marching alongside teachers and families - Serbia: the student movement born from the 2024 Novi Sad station collapse is now running its own list in the 25 October election And, by the way, the fact it's also happening in countries with close to no immigration - like Albania - goes to show how reductive it is to label these movements, like JD Vance and Trump did with France, as the fruit of "the migrants hav[ing] taken over." As is often the case, it's much more a story of "it's the economy, stupid." As such, Trump with his war on Iran, has ironically done much more to fuel this (pun intended) than any migrant.
BREAKING: Albania right now, anti-government protests have erupted into violence.

🇷🇺🇪🇺 According to the Financial Times, European leaders may soon hold direct talks with President Putin offering Russia two options: - A freeze on the current line of contact in exchange Ukraine never joins NATO - Ukraine gives up Donbass for NATO alliance Let's start off with a NO. There is no compromise on the Russian military's agenda. Russia's offer since 2022 has remained constant; - No NATO - The total surrender of Donbass - Denazification - End to attacks and harassment of ethnic Russians In exchange; - Ukraine can join the EU - Peace The Russian Federation is not an equal to Ukraine. The Russian military has always maintained the advantage and ability to escalate beyond Kiev's imaginations. If the terms aren't agreed upon, Kiev and Odessa will also fall into the liberation objective.

You want to understand why some Arab capitals fear Yemen? A country with no conventional air force. No conventional navy. One of the poorest countries on earth. Devastated by years of the most sophisticated air campaign American weapons could provide. And it is still there. Still firing. Still fighting. Still, in the most literal sense, unsuppressed. The fear is not irrational. It is the fear that every entrenched order feels when it watches a people with nothing prove that having nothing is not the same as having no power. The same fear Washington felt in Vietnam. The same lesson, arriving again, in different mountains, with different weapons and the same fundamental truth: You cannot bomb a people out of their own cause. Gulf capitals know this. It keeps them awake. It should.

I can confirm that it is highly likely that Israel's Andy Burnham is almost certainly lying through his teeth.
UK PM Andy Burnham confirms that the RAF Fairford incident was "highly likely coordinated in Iran, almost certainly directed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard."

Here is what the alignment actually looks like in practice. Saudi Arabia, the custodian of Islam’s holiest sites, coordinating with Israel. The UAE, self-styled hub of the Arab future, normalizing with the state that controls Gaza. Bahrain, a majority Shia country, hosting the U.S. Fifth Fleet while its own Sunni-led government suppresses its own Shia population. These are not small ironies on the margins of the story. These are the story. A regional order in which some Arab states have decided that their own survival requires alignment against other Arabs, other Muslims, other poor people trying to determine their own future. That is the political order they have chosen. And they chose it because the alternative, genuine independence, genuine sovereignty, genuine regional solidarity, would require confronting not just Iran but the system that keeps them in place.

FLASH: ZELENSKY WIL DAT DE WERELD "RUSLAND VERNIETIGT". 33 doden na een golf Russische luchtaanvallen. Tragisch.

This is just not true. As soon as I became foreign secretary I asked the security services the same question and they replied that there was no evidence of any successful interference in the 2016 referendum, by Russia or any other power. Either the security services have changed their view - which would be very odd - or Burnham is lying about what he has been told. After all Starmer was in power for two years and had access to exactly the same information. theguardian.com/technology/2…

The Saudi-NATO proxy war against Yemen killed some 400,000 people, with nearly 20 million requiring humanitarian aid. The bombing campaign on its own killed around 20,000 Yemeni civilians. Children under 5 accounted for 60% of all non-combat losses.
Houthis have once again struck Riyadh’s airport, taking three innocent lives. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. We stand in full solidarity with the people of Saudi Arabia and all our Gulf partners. Attacks on civilian infrastructure are unacceptable. Iran's proxies must stop their reckless and violent acts.

US Treasury Secretary Bessent on Iran: ‘If these Iranians love their country, congratulations, you get to stay there. They can't go see their relatives in London, their girlfriends in Paris. They're cut off from the world.’ Collective punishment against the Iranian people for refusing to overthrow their government. Collective punishment may be against international law, but it is American foreign policy tradition.
Prof. Jeffrey Sachs: ‘The war in Iran is the DUMBEST of all possible wars.’ ‘President Trump brags that six previous presidents resisted it, but he did it. I don’t think that’s a matter of bragging. I think it’s a matter of the most shocking incompetence we probably ever had in that office. But the war with Iran, which was a war of aggression and murder of the Iranian leadership on February 28th of this year, will end simply when the United States leaves. We don’t even need an agreement, because if the US leaves, Iranians are going to open the Strait of Hormuz wide open to sell oil, and the rest of the Gulf region where you are and all the rest will go back to normal life. It’s the US that provoked this with Israel. It’s the US that kept it going. There is no reason for this war to continue another hour. The United States should turn around and go home, as far as I’m concerned. Nobody has to agree on anything. If you’ve done something unbelievably stupid, stop doing it.’ Watch the full interview 👇
