The death of 1-year old Kohen Wiley is a tragedy that demands truth and accountability.
An officer opened fire into a vehicle outside a Mississippi Walmart after accusing Kohen's mother of shoplifting, even though receipts proved she legally purchased the diapers. Kohen Wiley was inside the vehicle when he was fatally shot by police officer.
The decision by state authorities to decline pressing charges fails to honor the standard of justice every family deserves. The King Center calls for a thorough review and full justice for Kohen and his family.

Sixty-three years ago today, Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley were murdered in the bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church.
They were children. Their lives were stolen by racial hatred and terrorism.
Remember their names. Honor their lives. And continue the work of confronting the hatred and dehumanization that made their murders possible.

Dolly Parton was a true American icon. First introduced to the world as a "little girl from up in East Tennessee," she became a global superstar.
Her career accolades included 11 Grammy awards, an Emmy, an honorary Oscar, and — my favorite — more than 300 million books sent to millions of children around the world through her Imagination Library. All at once she was kind, modest, and funny. With her music, her philanthropy, and her style, Dolly was one of one.
Doug and I send our prayers to her family, friends, and all those who have been touched by her magic. We will always love you, Dolly.

From King Center CEO, Dr. Bernice A. King: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton. Her extraordinary voice and songwriting entertained and brought joy to generations, and she used her influence beyond music to affirm human dignity, inclusion, and the importance of treating people with love and respect.
Through her commitment to literacy, she also opened doors of possibility for children around the world.
In 2023, I had the privilege of honoring Dolly on behalf of The King Center as our Christine King Farris “Legacy of Service in Education” honoree.
My prayers are with her family, loved ones, and all who were touched by her light.”
Simply put, Dolly Parton was an American original. She was an inspiration to millions. She was a relentless advocate for women and for equality. Through her Imagination Library, she placed the gift of reading into the hands of millions of children because she understood literacy is the foundation of opportunity.
But perhaps most importantly, Dolly treated everyone with kindness and respect. She lived her values with a flair and vitality for life that was uniquely her own. She was a trailblazer in every sense of the word, and she will be missed by millions around the world.
Jill and I are keeping her family, her friends, and her millions of fans in our prayers.
God bless Dolly Parton.

105 years ago today, a mob of White people began a vile, murderous attack on the Greenwood District, a flourishing Black community in Tulsa and the home of Black Wall Street.
Imagine if the Greenwood District, and many other thriving Black communities, had not been intentionally destroyed at the hands of racism and white supremacy.

This is what Greenwood looked like before it was attacked and destroyed. Before the smoke and flames, before the killing, there was a thriving Black community known as Black Wall Street, filled with Black owned businesses, homes, faith, dignity, and possibility.
What began on May 31, 1921 was an assault on one of the most prosperous Black communities in the nation, a place where Black enterprise, excellence, and self determination were visible in every block. The violence would continue into June 1 and leave that community devastated. More than 35 blocks were destroyed, hundreds were killed, and thousands were left homeless.
We must remember not only how Greenwood was destroyed, but what was stolen.

My father on April 4, 1967, one year before he was assassinated:
“I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today: my own government."
Still…TODAY.

We have the signatures needed to bring a vote to the floor to extend the ACA tax credits—but MAGA Mike is canceling votes for the rest of the week, once again turning his back on the American people.
On January 1, millions of Americans will see their health care premiums skyrocket because Republicans are refusing to do their job. We all deserve better.

For those who think Ketanji Brown Jackson stabbed vulnerable American families in the back on SNAP benefits, take a moment to listen to this.
The key here is to be smart not reactive. I know it’s difficult given the passion surrounding this highly charged issue, but it will facilitate a more durable solution.

“The first day I couldn’t stop crying. To walk down those halls and see all the photos and the history and the legacy, To finally be a part of that for a man that I just idolized. My dad was my hero, and still is to this day, forever will be.” #HankNorthrop #WayneNorthrop #Days
