Governments keep telling us ID checks will make the internet safer. Here is what an ID check actually did for a woman in Pennsylvania. Cash App demanded Social Security numbers to stop fraud. Hers leaked in a data breach, a scammer opened an account with it, and the police arrested her for his crime. She spent three nights in jail. Cash App now refuses to show her the account because she can’t prove it’s hers, which is exactly what she has been telling them. Every ID check builds another vault of stolen identities waiting to happen. The more of them we’re forced through, the easier fraud gets, and the people paying for it are the ones who did everything they were told.

NO BACKDOOR DIGITAL ID: Freeze One Login Public opposition stopped the Government’s proposed national Digital ID scheme. But GOV UK One Login continues to expand across 250+ government services, functions and processes – including obligations people must fulfil, rather than merely optional “services”. We are calling for an immediate freeze on further expansion, a proper independent review and a legal guarantee that nobody will be forced – or financially pressured – to use it. “Politicians and Ofcom continue to demand tech companies redesign their services for children while pushing compulsory identity verification. They ignore existing parental controls … If child safety was really a top priority, why aren’t they teaching parents how to use these controls?”
I’d like to expose the lack of technical expertise behind British online child safety policies, challenge Ofcom’s credibility, and explain why existing parental controls should be prioritised over compulsory identity verification. To anyone with expertise in online child safety, this is more word soup from another British MP. I’ve advised the British government on these matters, and I can say with confidence that despite their confident statements, politicians demonstrate a lack of basic technical knowledge. The same applies to Ofcom. After multiple meetings with Ofcom and the British Home Office about SMS fraud, I was told the Home Office would write to Ofcom asking it to stop misleading the public about SMS fraud because it was siding with mobile operators instead of the public. During my final meeting with Ofcom, I asked why it continued to repeat claims I’d already demonstrated were technically false, including through testing that involved every UK mobile network operator. My experience has left me convinced that Ofcom is causing more harm than good. The same problem is evident in the debate about online child safety. Smartphones already have excellent parental controls that millions of parents and schools use to block unsuitable apps, websites and services, restrict content and set time limits. Yet politicians and Ofcom continue to demand that tech companies redesign their services for children while pushing compulsory identity verification. They ignore existing parental controls that allow parents to protect their children without forcing everyone else to surrender their privacy and online anonymity. If child safety was really a top priority, why aren’t they teaching parents how to use these controls? Journalists should be asking politicians and regulators two simple questions. Why aren’t you educating parents about the parental controls already built into smartphones, which independent technical experts in child safety and mobile security consider highly effective? And why are you demanding that social media and other companies make their content safe for children while simultaneously arguing that children should be banned from those same services? You need to pick one. Making every adult service safe for every child is technically impossible. Preventing children from accessing unsuitable services is already possible through smartphone parental controls. Parents can decide what’s appropriate for their own children without forcing an entire country to surrender its privacy and online anonymity. The relentless push for compulsory identity verification, while ignoring existing parental controls, tells me that protecting children isn’t the real priority.

ONE LOGIN: You should not have to pay for refusing a government digital identity system No one should be forced into a single digital identity system to access essential services - but up to 8 million company directors are already being pushed into it The only free route is One Login - directors typically must pay £60 - £120 to avoid it @UKLabour @Conservatives @LibDems @reformparty_uk

I don’t have £2 million in assets, and I don’t earn £200k a year. I’m quite short on both counts. So the HMRC wealth audit doesn’t impact me. Yet. But it signals a clear intention. A lack of respect for the individual. What is yours is only yours until the government decides they want it to fund further welfare expansion. Property rights only exist in this country as long as your holdings are meagre enough to escape the fiscal Eye of Sauron. They will come for it all.

HMRC has quietly sent hundreds of letters to wealthy people asking them to reveal what they own. Not what they earn or what tax they've paid, but what they own. Here's what's going on. A unit called the Wealthy Team covers anyone with "incomes of £200,000 or more, or assets equal to or above £2m in any of the last three years". That's about 850,000 people. The letters ask for a meeting to discuss "sources of wealth", "future intentions", trusts, companies, family arrangements and even "significant life events" you expect in the coming years. It is presented as voluntary, but there's a nudge: "We may still need to carry out compliance checks on your tax returns. However, speaking with you first may help avoid this." Until now, inspectors have usually only asked about income and earnings. Experts call this a "sea change". One lawyer asked the obvious question: "does HMRC have a right to know what someone owns and not simply that they have paid the right amount of tax?" A tax adviser said: "No other G20 country asks for this level of detail from its taxpayers about what they own." So what is it for? Advisers suspect it is groundwork for an exit tax, a charge on your wealth for leaving the country. As one put it: "Building that knowledge could indeed be part of moving towards an exit tax." You don't have to be a billionaire to see the problem.

NET ZERO: C40 Cities, bankrolled by US billionaire Mike Bloomberg, works through city mayors to advance far-reaching Net Zero policies - including measures designed to restrict car use. This allows policies never clearly put to voters in a national manifesto to spread from city to city, often without proper public debate or parliamentary scrutiny. Andy Burnham signed a major C40 transport declaration as Greater Manchester Mayor. His drive to transfer even more power to regional mayors should be examined in that context

It's appalling the government is considering forcing us to "show our papers" - passports or other ID - just to use social media. ✍️ USE OUR FREE TOOL TO TELL YOUR MP - NO: togetherdeclaration.org/noid… The public has just rejected “Papers Please” Digital IDs. Now @andyburnham - who never stood in a leadership contest, never mind a general election, and whose idea appeared in no manifesto - is pushing another extreme proposal. 42 children's safety organisations including the NSPCC oppose a so-called "social media ban", pointing out it could make things worse. In any case supposed child safety is no blank cheque to destroy privacy and anonymity for all. Platforms already know vast amounts about users and already use AI to infer age. Before forcing millions of adults through ID checkpoints, the government and platforms must explain why the data they already hold isn’t enough - and how being forced to upload government-issued ID could ever be necessary, proportionate, or indeed safe in itself. Parents, not politicians, should decide for their children. Law-abiding adults should not have to prove their identity and risk data hacks of their highly sensitive information simply to use social media. ✍️ USE OUR TOOL TO TELL YOUR MP - NO: togetherdeclaration.org/noid…
