I am genuinely sad about what’s happening at the BBC. I worked there (in chunks) for nearly a decade and left three and a half years ago. It’s not the same place I left and the challenges are really nuanced (I know nuance is tough on X but it’s important)🧵

I worry deeply that the metric of success at the BBC is now more narrowly defined as “megahit”. If you’re not making The Traitors or Newscast, that can live in multiple places in multiple formats/spinoffs and take on a life on its own, you may be at risk in future.

The BBC needs eyes and ears on its content. It has to stay relevant. I feel like I’ve heard these arguments my entire adult life. The BBC also has a duty to do what others don’t and/or can’t - the “inform” bit of the Reithian values - and I genuinely hope there’s a way through.
