The release of captive bred Freshwater Pearl Mussels on the back of river restoration in Wales has begun. This is a year's work for me since starting my role with NRW, but decades of work by numerous NRW conservationists for this Endangered sp, which see the end of the beginning
We’ve released over 100 captive-reared young freshwater pearl mussels into a protected location in a river where habitat was recently restored

Here, in 8 minutes, he basically summarizes The Anxious Generation, The TAG Movement, and Let Grow.

🏠 Empty homes → much-needed homes.
We’re starting work to bring 52 long-term vacant properties back into use, beginning in Anfield.
They’ll be refurbished to provide quality homes for local residents and help improve neighbourhoods.

Tens of thousand of people have enabled the @WildlifeTrusts to buy the Rothbury Estate. Largest land purchase in a generation brings an area of Northumberland the size of Athens into Nature recovery. Brilliant & bold work that sets a new bar for ambition for Nature in England.

Monarch butterfly numbers climbed 64% this season, thanks in part to the growing number of people creating pollinator gardens. It’s a clear reminder of what shared purpose can accomplish. Look what we did
Their recovery is still fragile, though, so continuing, and expanding those plantings next year remains essential.

We lit up our iconic White Lion last week, to mark ZSL’s 200th anniversary. But did you know the Lion sits within an official Site of Special Scientific Interest?
Our Bagot goats, White Windsor goats and a whole flock of Soay sheep live wild on the chalk grassland, helping more than 100 species of native plants, invertebrates and animals living there to thrive.
Lighting up the lion took careful planning to keep this unique space safe for the incredible wildlife that call it home. We fine-tuned the light frequencies, the colour of the lights and even how long to light it for.
The White Lion lights up again this Wednesday, 30 September, at dusk. It will then be lit every Wednesday until the end of 2026 as part of our brand new Wildlife Wednesdays – a shining beacon of hope for wildlife.

First zoo visits, family traditions, the animal that sparked a lifelong obsession... it all belongs in our Community Storybook. At the end of 2026, it will be preserved in the ZSL Library and Archives.

In the 1940s, a group of Oxford writers and academics would gather every week to listen to new chapters of J.R.R. Tolkien's ‘The Lord of the Rings’. English professor Hugo Dyson would sometimes interrupt these readings with, ‘Oh fuck, not another elf’.

Amazingly, a very significant component of sea level rise is depletion of freshwater on land. As we drain wetlands & pump aquifers, so more is in the sea & less in land.
