New: The White House acknowledged today's inflation number today is "disappointing." But, more than that: It stands in direct opposition to the economic message touted by Trump and Republicans in the final days of the 2026 campaign. Link below, more to come today:

NEW w/ @bencasselman: The Fed has a conundrum on its hands as it tries to tame elevated inflation. One of the primary drivers of growth — A.I. — appears nearly immune to the higher borrowing costs the central bank has begun to impose on the economy. That means the Fed might need to tighten the screws on the economy more than otherwise would be the case to sufficiently slow down activity to return inflation to the 2% target. The brunt of that adjustment will fall predominantly on industries more sensitive to higher rates, such as housing and the automotive sector, and in turn the people employed by the companies in those fields.

This is unusual: a Washington Post columnist is calling for the prosecution of the newspaper’s sources
Whoever leaked this is a traitor and ought to be prosecuted

American consumers are increasingly concerned about AI. It’s even showing up in the University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey 10% of respondents spontaneously mentioned AI. "On balance, negative comments on AI outweigh positive comments," Hsu said. "Still, at this time, AI is far less important for consumer views of the economy than gasoline prices, mentioned by nearly one-third of consumers.”

In a Linkedin post on Friday, Beth Hammack of @ClevelandFed says she is hearing from her business contacts in the region that inflation "isn’t coming from only one source—it’s broad based." "For the first time in my tenure, I’m hearing from businesses who say they think we need to take action to curb inflation, and from consumers who can’t make ends meet about a growing sense of despair."

Bart De Wever, the Belgian prime minister, has a cat with a very active Instagram account. On Tuesday, it posted: “I slept so well! You too?” The cat was hugging a Trump plushie. Taylor Swift’s “Karma” played in the background of the post. nytimes.com/2026/07/07/world…

it's hard to know what to make of this, but... Trump just hinted he plans to go to Congress and ask for something for adults on retirement/savings, citing Australia, which has a compulsory retirement system. but he did not say more than that, beyond a promise to "try very hard"
