Almost always listening to music

A very personal piece this morning on how The Blue Nile's 'Hats', as well as being a cult classic, is the most important album in my life. RTs, shares and subscribers appreciated 🎶🙏 open.substack.com/pub/top10n…

#NoGoodMusicAnymore Space Afrika | Quiet Storm Perfect company for reading The Unconsoled with the extra hour this morning - a sprawling album that feels like a not-quite-there dream. Wonderful stuff and I need to listen to more of this duo.

I'm a sucker for an appropriately named album and they don't come much more apt than Filth. Swans' debut is doused in dirty, distorted guitar and proto-industrial percussion to the point you need a bubble bath after hearing one song, never mind the full 37 minutes of agonising aural torture. If there's any doubt, I love it.

#NoGoodMusicAnymore Holy Tongue | Basilikum Holy moly, this music was made for the increasingly dark nights. Psychedelic, dub, post-punk...you name it, these guys have got it in bucketloads. So much freedom and propulsion, this is absolutely in the reckoning as another best 2026 album. Orange 28 👇 youtu.be/7S29s5l6G2g?si=Gpfk…

I've not been enamoured with a lot of the highly rated releases this year, but Fine's Jazz Dreams is pretty wonderful. Can't put any of it into words, but it sounds how the cover looks and I think that's wonderful.

Talking Heads | Houses In Motion If the first four songs on Remain In Light are the stars, then the second half is akin to hidden treasure. Houses In Motion is just as funky as what's come before, but with Byrne going full spoken word and Jon Hassell providing ominous trumpet magic. youtu.be/Yt9_uyXgOzc?si=sw_f…

With a week to go until Halloween, my record wall is looking decidedly spooky 🎃🎶

What a treat Fudge is. Michael Kiwanuka's new album almost feels like a cheat code. An hour's worth of his soothing melodies, warm instrumentation and those subtle stringed conclusions, but he does them so brilliantly. This was on repeat all yesterday and this morning is no different.

It's largely cut from the same time as Small Changes, which was less well received than KIWANUKA on the whole. There are similarities, but also this record does feel more in your face like what came before. Sing is really bloody good 👇 youtu.be/7esTGcAwxcM?si=wffI…

Was really sceptical about the new Ghosts film, because the series ended pretty perfectly. But it was wonderful. The exact humour and warmth we're used to, but a bigger and grander adventure. It was a busy showing too, and everyone else seemed to be loving it as much as me and Lisa did.

Michael Kiwanuka | Hard To Say Goodbye New Kiwanuka out tomorrow, and revisiting his finest hour. This seven minute slice of heaven is just one of many highlights on his third album, produced by Danger Mouse and resplendent with strings, epic harmonies, and distorted guitar solo. youtu.be/786dl0llF4c?si=Czt5…

Boards Of Canada | The Campfire Headphase I believe BoC are the band I've loved the longest without ever owning their music physically. Better late than never and as this is - gun to my head - my favourite Boards record, it felt the perfect place to start. An empty house for its first spin means volume 11.

Wweennddyy Eeiisseennbbeerrgg iiss bbllooooddyy bbrriilliiaanntt. Not content with releasing one of this year's finest records, Eisenberg has transformed two songs into 'infinite' versions. No mere remixes or ambient space-outs, but reworkings that absolutely kick ass.

Neil Young | Unknown Legend Two decades after Harvest, Young's eventual successor to his best known album kicks off with a song that sounds straight out of that record. After deviations through electronica, grunge and plenty else between, this song acts as a time machine that eradicated 20 years in the blink of an eye. youtu.be/G4Vv4U7JHGM?si…

So many amazing moments on Inferno, but the unrelenting amount my neck hairs stand up through Age Of Capricorn and Father And Son is no joke. That 13 year wait for new Boards Of Canada was somehow worth it 10 times over.

Thirty years old, but John Beltran's Ten Days Of Blue still sounds from other realms completely. Music fit for lazy nights with only the pitter patter of raindrops for company.

#AllThatJazz Once again enamoured with Possible Utopias For Jazz Quintet, quite possibly my favourite 'jazz' release of the year. Considering that crowded field, it's no mean feat. These seven tracks cover so much ground with Pike's percussive masterstrokes almost always front and centre atop a dazzling array of soundscapes.
