Pause your pitcher's video at foot strike. Look at his chest.
If it's already turned to home plate, his hips and trunk opened together. The stretch that whips the arm is gone, and that's velocity he's leaving on the mound.
Hard throwers look different: front foot down, hips open, chest still closed.
The research backs it up. Professional pitchers rotated the trunk significantly later than college, high school and youth pitchers. Among skeletally mature pitchers, they also had the lowest shoulder rotational torque (Aguinaldo, Buttermore & Chambers, Journal of Applied Biomechanics, 2007).
Try it tonight: film from the side, pause at foot strike, check the chest.

Swipe for the grip (demonstrated by former MLB pitcher David Aardsma), the velocity, spin, movement and whiff rate of each one compared with the MLB average.
Then look at the last slide. 6 of the 7 threw their pitch harder than the league average for that pitch, by an average of 2.7 mph. Movement matters. Velocity makes every pitch better.

Data: Baseball Savant / Statcast, 2026 regular season, pitchers with 100+ PA ending on the pitch. Pitch value = run value. MLB averages for velocity and movement are for same-handed pitchers; spin averages are for all pitchers. SINKING ISNāT DRIVING. ā¾
Watch the first moveānot just the arm.
ā Going down without moving toward the plate.
ā Reaching forward without the loading cue.
ā
Lowering while the hips move forward.
Our cue: DOWN + FORWARD. TOGETHER.
The goal is to load the back leg as you move, instead of treating the drop and drive as separate actions.
Watch the MechanicsDNA examples: first, the X shows drop-then-drive. Then the check shows down and forward together. Follow the hips through both deliveries.
Treat this as a coaching cueānot a fixed inch-for-inch rule for every pitcher.

ARM-SIDE MISS? WATCH YOUR CHEST. ā¾
Before you change your aim, watch the sequence.
Brent breaks down early chest rotation, an arm-only correction, and a hip-first cue you can compare in your own video.
The cue: during the stride, let your hips lead and let your trunk follow. Watch when the chest turns and where the throwing arm is at that moment.
An arm-side miss alone doesn't tell you the cause. Use this as a checkpoint for your deliveryānot a diagnosis from one pitch.

ON TIME. STILL MISSED.
Watch the World Series with a different question: WHERE did the bat miss?
In the 2026 MLB regular-season data, 11,601 of 23,132 tracked four-seam whiffs were classified āon time.ā Thatās 50.2%.
āOn timeā means within Statcastās ±7-millisecond window. It doesnāt mean perfect timingāand it doesnāt guarantee contact.
Among those on-time misses, the fastball and curveball showed very different vertical patterns. Same timing label. Different questions for the coach.
We also tested whether swing-error patterns improved future whiff-rate forecasts. The gain was small in one model and did not hold across model families. The methods and results are included in our research brief.
The takeaway: a whiff is an outcome. It is not a complete diagnosis.

4 lift styles. 2 to fix. ā¾
The issue isnāt simply whether your lead leg extends. Watch the whole move.
ā Over-rotating.
ā Aggressively kicking the front leg.
ā
Extending the lift leg while holding closed.
ā
Internally rotating the lift leg while holding closed.
The last example is the inward-turning, Japanese-style lift I coach.
The takeaway: an extended leg doesnāt automatically mean an open delivery. Review how the lift, stride, hips and trunk work together. āHold closedā is a coaching cue, not a command to stop your hips from rotating.
Save the four-way comparison for your next bullpen, or send it to a pitcher working on the same move.

Same pitcher. Same landmarks. Different clock. ā±ļø
One demonstration takes about 1.27 seconds from peak leg lift to foot plant. The other takes about 0.73.
That is a visible timing differenceānot proof that a shorter timer automatically means more velocity or less arm stress.
Hereās the useful next step: look beyond how fast it appears. Review your stride length, foot plant, max layback and release together.
MechanicsDNA gives you a closer look at stride length and event timing in a 3D report. The example values shown belong to that report; they are not targets every pitcher should copy.

46.8% Whiff. Thereās more to a changeup than the grip.
One MLB changeup produced 252 whiffs over 538 swings in 2025. Hitters batted just .154 in at-bats ending on that pitch.
The MLB changeup average? 30.9% Whiff.
But there isnāt one effective profile. The three changeups in this carousel averaged 88.0, 86.3 and 79.8 mphāand each held hitters below .175.

ROLL. SPIN. DRIVE. Which one is your back foot doing? šā¾
Watch each foot movement through its finish. Then use the labeled detail replays to see the difference.
ā ROLL OVER: the foot tips onto its edge.
ā SPIN OPEN: watch when the foot starts turning.
ā
DRIVE THROUGH: my coaching cue is to feel the big-toe side as you finish the drive.
The timing is the point. A foot turning after push-off is a different moment from an early turn. Donāt try to lock your foot through the entire delivery.

] Give Your Hips a Head Start
Ever feel like youāre putting EVERYTHING into a throw⦠but your arm is doing all the work?
Before you try to throw harder, take a closer look at the order
things happen.
Your hips and chest shouldnāt have to race each other to the finish line.
Watch the belt and chest as the front foot lands. Do the hips begin opening while the chest stays back? Or does everything turn together?
That difference is what weāre working on here.
The goal isnāt to crank yourself into the biggest twist possible. Itās to give the hips a head start, let the trunk follow, and keep the arm working with the movement.
Think āhips lead, chest follows.ā
And āstay backā doesnāt mean freeze your chest while the rest of your body keeps going. The trunk still needs to rotate through the throw. Weāre working on the timingānot holding a position forever.
Hereās something you can try with your next pitching video:
ā¾ļø Film a full-body throw from the side.
ā¾ļø Pause near front-foot contact and watch your belt and chest.
ā¾ļø Play it forward slowly. Does the chest follow the hips, or do they appear to open together?
A single camera angle wonāt tell you everything, but it can give you a useful starting point and a better question to bring to your coach.
In this reel, weāre using the Trunk Excelerator to help athletes practice that relationship. Then we take the device off and work on carrying the feeling into the throw.
The drill is practice. The goal is a movement you can repeat without the tool.
Start with controlled reps and one clear cue. Donāt force extra rotation or chase a radar number at the expense of the movement.
Save this and compare it with your next bullpen video. Sometimes the next step isnāt more effortāitās learning where that effort belongs.
Want to see how we use the Trunk Excelerator and the training that goes with it? Comment TRUNK below and Iāll send you the link.

Your foot moved. Did your body? ā¾
A long stride doesnāt tell the whole story. Watch what your hips do while your foot travels.
ā Judging the stride by foot distance alone.
ā
Following the hips as the body moves down the mound.
Brentās cue in this demonstration: keep the trunk slightly behind the hips as you drive forward. The back leg helps propel the body; the front leg brakes forward travel as the trunk rotates.
Then watch Steven Laceyās real MechanicsDNA 3D replay. Look at the relationship between his pelvis and trunk as the stride transitions into rotation.

Undrafted doesnāt mean finished.
Keagan Gillies went undrafted in 2019. He worked on mobility and strength at TopVelocity. Baltimore drafted him in 2021.
And thereās more to the story:
David Aardsma ā four surgeries nearly ended his career. He rebuilt his fastball with TopVelocity: 85 to 95 mph.
Cody Hall ā after a broken back, he rebuilt his fastball with TopVelocity: 89 to 102 mph.
Steven Lacey ā 89 to 101 mph during his time at TopVelocity.
Those development ranges are reported by Brent Pourciau. Individual results developed over time; they arenāt promised camp outcomes.
Alongside Eric Orze, Kris Medlen and Aaron Barrett, these seven pitchers show different chapters of developmentāfrom working toward an opportunity to rebuilding an established career.
