Today @TheLancet published our AMIE study with @BIDMC_Medicine, the first prospective study of patient-facing conversational diagnostics in a real clinic. AMIE is a research system people can chat with before doctors appointments. Testing AMIE outside the lab with real urgent care patients showed how technology can help gather medical histories safely. Clinicians reported that the summaries helped them prepare for visits in 75% of cases and influenced their approach to care in more than half. AMIE’s differential diagnoses also matched the doctors’ final diagnoses 90% of the time giving clinicians more time to focus on patient care. It’s Google’s first-ever paper in The Lancet’s main journal!

Robotic cholecystectomy cost about $5,200 more over 1 year without reducing bile duct injury. Among 384,617 patients with acute cholecystitis, robotic cases had a marginally higher bailout rate but fewer downstream endoscopic and operative interventions after bailout. A new @TIME article highlights a JACS analysis of geographic disparity in surgeon supply across the US. The study found that 38% of US counties have no general surgeon, affecting more than 15 million Americans. Grateful for the opportunity to serve as Interim Chair of @PittSurgery. For 27 yrs, Tim Billiar has built an extraordinary department & shaped generations of surgeons and scientists. It is a humbling privilege to help steward what he has built. Thank you, Tim. #Hail2Pitt @UPMC
A New Chapter in Pitt Surgery Leadership Today marks an important transition for the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC. After 27 years as Chair, Billiar Timothy, MD, will step down from the role effective September 30. It is difficult to capture the full impact of Dr. Billiar’s leadership in this post. Over nearly three decades, he has helped shape our department through his contributions to patient care, surgical education and research. He has trained generations of surgeons and surgeon-scientists, many of whom have gone on to leadership roles of their own. His scientific contributions, including more than 900 peer-reviewed publications and more than 35 years of continuous NIH funding, have had a lasting influence on the field of trauma and inflammation. We are grateful that Dr. Billiar will continue his work at Pitt in his role as Distinguished Professor of Surgery and at UPMC as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer. Congratulations to @macky_neal, Watson Chair and Professor of Surgery, on his appointment as interim chair. As a distinguished surgeon-scientist, educator and a busy general and trauma surgeon, Dr. Neal brings excellence in clinical care, translational research, and innovation to this new role. Please join us in thanking Dr. Billiar for his exceptional service and welcoming Dr. Neal as he leads the department through this transition. @TheBilliarLab #PittSurgery #UPMC #SurgicalLeadership #AcademicMedicine #Surgery

Unfortunately EGS tends to be treated like leftovers in the fridge… people come and take some whenever they’re hungry, and when they’re not, they leave it there and go back to what they were doing.

The FDA just authorized the first Apple Vision Pro app for use during surgery. Stryker’s SportSuite Vision creates a virtual surgical cockpit, putting the live camera feed, CT scans, and planning tools in the surgeon’s field of view.

Very thoughtful article. Academic medicine needs to figure out how to right the ship. More talent are leaving academics for private or industry opportunities. The question to ask now is, “Does prestige of academics even matter to the new generation? opmed.doximity.com/articles/…

How can surgical researchers avoid the “Table 2 fallacy”? Clearly define the primary exposure, avoid interpreting adjustment covariates as independent risk factors, and align conclusions with the primary causal question. ovid.com/10.1097/SLA.0000000…

At exactly this time on November 24, 1963 (also a Sunday), Dr. Tom Shires and his residents begin the trauma laparotomy on Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald was found to have the SMA sheared off the aorta, along with R kidney and IVC injuries. He also got a resuscitative thoracotomy.
